VISUAL INSPECTION

The most cost effective method,

It must be take place
(i) Prior to welding,
(ii) During welding
(iii) After welding

VISUAL INSPECTION BEFORE WELDING

The following points are to be checked

Base metal specification of quality, type and size

Cleanness from oil, grease, paint, metal oxides
Dimensional accuracy, flatness and straightness
All alignment, fit up and joint preparation
Process and procedure variables
Electrode size and type
Provisions for pre-heat and post-heat
Methods used for control distortion

VISUAL INSPECTION DURING WELDING

The following points are to be checked

Sequence of weld deposited

Weld cleaned properly before the next run
Electrode angle
Arc length, speed of travel and current setting
Proper fusion and maintenance of key hole

INSPECTION AFTER WELDING

The following points are to be checked
Surface defects such as
Cracks
Spatter
Undercut
Overlap
Weld profile
Blow hole / porosity
Lack of fusion/ penetration
Excess penetration
Un filled crater / groove

VISUAL INSPECTION REQUIRES

Good eye sight and sufficient light
Pocket steel rule
Weld gauge
Try square
Magnifying glass
