EMERGENCY CARE IN GERIATRICS

The art and science of care for older Emergency Department patients is in its
infancy. We only now are beginning to understand the complexities in caring for the
growing number of older persons. The anticipated growth of older population makes it
imperative that we increase the number of health care professionals with expertise in
caring for older patients in the Emergency Department and that we develop systems of
care that are elder friendly. This requires the cooperation of researchers, educators and
clinicians to improve the outcomes for our older patients. The National Center for
Geriatric Health primary role is to promote, establish and implement the emergency
geriatric care in our country.
