Introduce the unit, and the assessment of creating a webpage


promoting Australias natural and manmade landmarks, and
what they will be doing during the lesson: Identifying Australias
states, territories, and major landmarks natural and manmade
features
DIRECT INSTRUCTION :
Learners will work as a whole class on IWB with blank map of
Australia (appendix 1). Learners are asked to draw in from what
they can remember the states and territories borders and
labelling the capital cities and names of states
LM will assess the work the learners are doing, not correcting if
their drawings or answers are wrong or right, but letting peers
discuss each others answers and drawings
JOINT CONSTRUCTION/ WHOLE CLASS DISCUSSION :
Learners and LM are to then create a mind map on IWB and
have a whole class discussion, with Australia as the topic:
writing down all the states and territories, capital cities and any
other important details they can think of (display in class to be

LM will ask:
o Who knows the capital of Australia?
o How many states are there? Name them.
o How many territories? Name it.
o What are the capitals of the states and territory?
o Is there anything else you can think of that is important or
relates to Australia?
o Who knows some famous landmarks in Australia?

Conclusion

Introduce the power point (appendix 2) Introduction to


Australia: completing activities within the slides and having
whole class discussions and questions, focusing on the capitals
of Australias and where the borders of each state and territory
are situated on the Australian map
LM to discuss each slide in detail with class and complete
activities within the slides
o 1.Introduce the first slide: We are learning all about
Australia, how it was formed and its landmarks
o 2. Discuss with students the world map and where we are
located in the world: what countries they identify? What
countries are close to us?
o 3. Study the map of Australia with the leaners: ask
students to have a go at pointing out where Gladstone is
located on the map
o 4. Discuss with learners facts that they think are
interesting and important about Australia, add them to
the slide: We are the only country to have Kangaroos
o 5. Go over some quick facts about Australia
o 6. Open discussion with the learners on some of the major
landmarks in Australia: What are the landmarks? Who has
seen them? What state or territory are they located in?
What other land marks do you know of that are in
Australia?
o 7. Give learners the opportunity to answer the open
ended questions on the PowerPoint slide
o 8-15 Learners to gather information from slides about
Australis states and when they were formed

o 16. Students are to complete the activity in teams of
three, trying to memorise things on the Australian map
(slide 17)

(appendix 2) blank Australian map again on IWB calling on
learners to have a go at drawing in state and territories borders,
capital cities and identify name of states and territories based on
the new knowledge they have received from the PowerPoint

Finishing up the lesson by reading Our Australia: Alice Springs


by Phil Kettle to the class (emphasise on landmarks with in the
book): after reading whole class discussion on the landmarks
mentioned and record other landmarks in the Northern Territory
them onto brainstorming page on IWB (ready for next lesson)
