A vocabulary is a set of words known to a person or other entity, or that are part of a specific language.
In architecture, the word "vocabulary" is used figuratively for qualities or techniques distinctive
to a particular style, especially an architectural style. In order to increase your ability to look carefully
at a building, understand its style and period and to practice expressing your thoughts, it is important to
learn the architectural vocabulary used in the past and present.
In this Project, you are expected to compile a book of architectural vocabulary from the Pre-Historic
period up to the Romanesque time. Each detail should be a simple sketch, manually drawn and
should be not smaller than 8 cm X 8 cm. (2 sketches can fit in one sheet). Please note that photocopies
of details are not accepted. Each detail should accompany a brief description about it stating the
name, which part of the building its used in, type of materials commonly used, name of the building, time
period, etc. The book should have a total of 100 details.
Minimum number of details from each section could be as follows;
Pre- Historic
10
20
Greek Classical
20
Roman
20
15
Romanesque
15
This will be done as a group with 5 members in each group. Each group member will contribute equal
number of details under each topic. Please write your name on the sheets you have contributed. This will
be graded as per individual contribution.
