Brhat Jyotish Tattva: Volume 1: Lagna Bhava

(Excerpts from the Book)

(Work In Progress, Not Proofread yet)

Author: Sarajit Poddar (aka Varahamihira)

Chapter xx: Graha Lagna Phala

According to Brihat Parashari Hora Shastra, Lagna signifies Body (deha), Appearance (rpa), Wisdom
(jna), Complexion (vara), Strength and weakness (balbalam), Happiness (sukha), Sadness (dukha)
and Nature (svabhva).
When a Graha is placed in the Lagna, it has the ability to influence all the significations of this Bhava. The
influences are going to be positive or negative depending on the (1) Whether the graha is friendly or inimical to the
primary and secondary significators of the Lagna. The significator of Lagna is Surya, which stands for Ego (Iness)
and is the giver of vitality to the Lagna, so that the native is able fulfil the objective of this birth.
The secondary significators are important as a Graha may promote certain matters of the Bhava but may
diminish other matters. Understanding the secondary significators helps in judging the differentiation of the results
for different matters governed by the Bhava.
When a Krura Graha is placed in the Lagna, it gives stress pertaining to the matters ruled by it, unless the
Graha happens to be the lord of Lagna. A Lord never ruins the Bhava it owns, even if it is a Krura Graha. Again,
the results are not going to be negative, if the Krura Graha is placed in its exaltation sign, mulatrikona or a friendly
sign. The results are predominantly negative when the Krura graha is placed in a neutral, inimical, debilitated Rasi
falling in the Lagna Bhava. The Krura Grahas are Surya, Mangal, Shani, Rahu and Ketu.
On the other hand when, when Shubha Grahas are placed in the Lagna, the results pertaining to all the
significations of the Bhava are going to be positive. A Bhava that is owned, occupied or aspected by Shubha grahas
are conducive in producing auspicious results. What happens when the SHubha graha is placed in bad state
(avastha) in the Lagna Bhava? The results in that case will not be as positive, but it cant be negative as well. For
instance, when the shubha graha is in its enemy sign, debilitated etc. the power of the Graha to bestow auspicious
results will be limited i.e., it will be powerless. The ideal situation is when the Shubhagraha is placed in its Uccha,
Svakshetra, Mulatrikona or Mitra Rasi.
We also need to conscious about the Bhava ownership of the Grahas occupying the Lagna. The lords of the
Trikasthana (6/8/12) are considered as very evil and their conjunctions or aspects on the various Bhavas are
discouraged. However, what happens when a Shubha graha owns the Trikasthana and placed in the Lagna? For
instance, for Karka Lagna, Guru being the 6th lord exalted in the Lagna. Will it give positive or negative results?
When a Graha is capable of giving both positive and negative results, then it gives positive results when it is strong
and negative results when it is weak (ref: Jataka Desha Marga). Since, Guru is exalted in the Lagna being the 9th
lord, it will primarily give the auspicious results of its 9th lordship and negligible results pertaining to its 6th
lordship. Or perhaps, even if the 6th lordship brings struggles, conflicts and war, the outcome will be in favour of
the Native, as the 9th Lordship and Exaltation of Guru will make the Lagna stronger.
Following are the things one should take into consideration for developing a complete understanding (1)
What are the significations of the Bhava? (2) What is the Avastha of the Grahas in the Bhava? (3) Who are the
Karaka of the Bhava? (4) What are the Karakatva (significations) of the Karakas? (5) How the Graha is disposed
towards the significations of the Bhava and their governor?, (6) How the Bhava is disposed towards the Graha
significations?, (7) Which Bhava does the Graha owns? What is the impact of the Bhava lords placement in the

Bhava under consideration?, (8) Which nakshatra the Graha is placed?, (9) Who gets Uccha or Neecha in that
Bhava in the Naisargika Kundali?, (11) What is the Mood of the Graha in that Bhava in the Naisargika Kundali?
(12) Who is conjoined with the Graha?, (13) Who is aspecting the Graha?

Grahas in Lagna Bhava

According to Prasna Marga, when Lagna is under Shubha Influences, there is general comfort, success, good
health, financial prosperity, fame, promotions to higher positions. On the other hand, if there are negative
influences, there is failure, diseases in head, sorrows, dishonour, displacement, loss of money, pains all over the
body, discomfort in all ways.
How to study the effects arising out of the placement of a Graha in a Bhava? The creation is highly diverse,
yet the qualities of all manifested and un-manifested aspects of the creation are reflected primarily by the 9 grahas,
12 rasis and 12 bhavas. There are other secondary factors such as upgrahas, apprakasha grahas, vargas etc. which
help in fine tuning the assessment of a horoscope, but nonetheless the grahas, rasis and bhavas are the primary
influencers of events that occur in the creation, including those happening in our lives. Now, how easy or difficult
it is to capture every details of the impact of the mentioned factors on things that we witness in our day to day life?
If anyone tries to write a book covering everything, the book will never end.
Thus, what mentioned by Jyotish texts only cover few aspects of what needs to be known. The real teacher is
the experience one gains in the inquisitive journey in the world of Jyotish. The results mentioned for the Bhava
placements of the grahas are merely seeds which need to be grown into trees by watering it through observations
and experiences. The classical authors have been very cautious in choosing the words which conveys the very apt
meaning of whats going to happen. They are not casual words which can be substituted by other words, without
really impacting the meaning. These words are actually tip of the iceberg, where the giant iceberg is hiding
submerged in the water. Hence, it is extremely important to catch the right purport or intent of the words used and
then reflect on it, to give rise to a mental tree, with innumerable leaves, flowers and fruits.
Lets take an example, Guru in the Lagna. Guru is the preceptor of the Devas, highly benevolent grahas and
his occupation in the Lagna and the Kendras have been highly extolled in various classics. According to
Kalyanavarma, the results of Gurus occupation in the Lagna are Attractive in appearance, energetic, long-life, act
after thoroughly assessing consequences, learned, courageous, highly dignified. The question now is, will the
results remain the same for different Lagnas? or they will get modified due to occupation in different Signs. The
conjunctions, aspects, avasthas, nakshatras etc. will come later. We need to start with the modification of the
results caused by Rasi in which Guru is placed in the Lagna. Now lets see what the Narada Purana says about
Gurus placement indifferent Rasis. It mentions the following results (1) Surya kshetra: commander of an army,
(2) Chandra kshetra: blessed with wife, wealth and children, (3) Kuja kshetra: having efficient friends(TBC), (4)
Budha kshetra: commanding a vast following or good clothes, (5) Svakshetra: governor of a province, (6) Shukra
kshetra: having wealth and happiness and owner of much gold(TBC); (7) Shani kshetra: not mentioned.
So What happens when Guru occupies Mesha in Lagna? Guru in Kuja kshetra gives good friends or
supporters. Firstly when Guru occupies a Mitra kshetra, its ability to give auspicious results is 25% (1 pada)1.
Hence the auspicious results such as Attractive in appearance, energetic, long-life, act after thoroughly assessing
consequences, learned, courageous, highly dignified. are to be reduced to 25%. The results would have been 100%
if Guru was exalted.
Again, it is not enough the understand the quantum, but also the quality. For instance, the Attractive
appearance is different when Guru is in Chandra Kshetra vs. Kuja Kshetra. In Chandra Kshetra, Guru has a
serene appearance and roundish face, like that of a Temple priest due to influence of Chandra. However, Guru in
Kuja kshetra can give one a dignified appearance, well proportioned limb, but like that of a commander in chief.
The level of Energy in Kuja Kshetra will be far higher than Chandra Kshetra as Kuja is Agni Tattva. Among both
the Kuja kshetra, Guru will have very high energy and drive in Mesha as that Rasi is Agni Rasi and is where Surya
gets exalted. Gurus ability to grant long life by protecting against all evil is very high when it is placed in in Uccha
or Sva Kshetra. In other Rasis, it is diminished to a certain extent.
Thus, it is important to focus on the words spoken by the Shastras and reflect on how they will get modified
due to other influences. But, nonetheless, some semblance of the results can be seen in all horoscopes having Guru

According to Bhava Manjari by Mukunda Daivagna, a grahas ability gives inauspicious results depends on its Rasi placement, (1) a Graha
is incapable of bestowing inauspicious results when occupying its Uccha Kshetra, (2) 1/4 inauspicious while placed in Mulatrikona, (3) 2/4
inauspicious in svakshetra, (4) 3/4 inauspicious in Mitra kshetra, (5) 3.5/4 inauspicious in Sama-kshetra and (6) 4/4 inauspicious in
Neecha-Shatru Kshetra and Asta avastha.

in the Lagna. But the results need to be ranked in a scale say, 1 to 5 where 5 is highest and 1 is lowest depending
on other factors. This is the most difficult part and requires years of practice.
While it is important to understand the rational behind the results derived from teh occupation of the grahas
in different Bhavas, one should be able to recall certain keywords when one thinks about the Grahas. Having all
the knowledge, but not the ability to recall does not help much. So the approach I have taken here is giving high
level results of Bhava placement from Saravali, the Rasi placements from Narada Purana to begin with. That is
followed by detailed explanation of the results, which can help in creating a mental map of why certain things are,
they way they are. The reason I chose Saravali and Narada Purana is because they are very concise and cover bulk
of the results that one should know due to Graha and Rasi placements. Then, the following section is the results
attributes to the Bhava placement by various classics. The final section for each graha are some key rules which
will help in fine tuning the assessment even further.

Surya in Lagna Bhava

Less hair on the head of body, lazy disposition, given to anger, prominent personality, honourable, weak sight,
coarse physique, courageous, impatient, unkind. Karka: swollen eyes. Mesha: Weak eye sight. Simha: night-blind.
Tula: Poverty, loss of children.

Impact of Rasi placement

(1) Mesha: fame, (2) Vrsha: hatred for women, (3) Mithuna: wealth, (4) Karka: cruelty or sharpness, (5)
Simha: wisdom or learning, (6) Kanya: poetic gift, (7) Tula: selling liquor, (8) Vrschika: riches, (9) Dhanu: honour
and reputation, (10) Makara: avarice, (11) Kumbha: penury, and (12) Meena: being without friends.

Detailed assessment
1. Surya the source of all power: Surya is powerhouse of the zodiac, but it is too fierce for others to
withstand. Hence, although this position is generally auspicious as it gives rise in life, endow with high
position and status, it also comes with huge stress, that can affect ones health.
2. Highly intelligent: What mentioned in #4 contradicts this and they cant co-exist. From this we can infer
that the author is pointing us toward looking at the sign where Sun is placed and also look at other
influences on the Sun. Predominance of fire (Sun, Mars, Ketu) increase intelligence while that of Air
(Saturn, Rahu) reduces it. Faculty of intelligence is governed by Jupiter. Hence if Sun is placed in
Jupiters sign or associated with Jupiter, then the native becomes highly intelligent.
3. Good health: Surya is the karaka for vitality and is a friend of health karaka Moon. Hence it promotes
good health and vitality. However, since it is a Krura Graha, endowed with very high pitta, it gives good
health only when it is in Good avastha i.e., placed in own sign or exaltation signs, or the sign owned by its
friends Chandra, Mangal and Guru. It is well placed in watery signs Karka, Vrschika and Meena, as here
the high pitta of Surya is subdued by the watery element. Nonetheless, the native can suffer from high
fevers due to high pitta, during bad dasas and in the antardasa of Surya or vice-versa.
4. Bilious constitution: Surya is predominant with Bile (all fiery planets do). Those who are predominantly
bilious constitution have a muscular build, rush to conclusion very fast, higher bodily temperature than
normal (Get references from Saravali and BPHS regarding impact of Tattva)
5. Hyperacidity: Due to preponderance of fiery element. Fire is stronger in fiery and airy signs and weak in
earthy and watery signs. Hence the hyper-acidic troubles are heightened in fiery and airy signs or if Sun in
lagna is influenced by other fiery or airy planets Mars, Ketu, Saturn and Rahu.
6. Uccha Surya: Famous. When Surya is exalted in Mesha Lagna, it makes the native famous. Sattva planets
Jupiter, Moon and Sun in the lagna bestow fame. Out of the said planets Sun is the brightest luminary
that cause the person to be noticed among many. The positive results such as this become more prominent
when Sun is comfortably placed and aspected by Shubha grahas. Sattva Grahas are important for fame as
Sattva Guna sustains the universe, while Rajas creates and Tamas Destroys.

7. Svoccha Navamsa: Position and authority, works in the government. When Sun is in own or exalted
Navamsa, Suns inherent trait of leadership (king) is heightened. Either they attain very high position in
life or they like to work with such people (ruler, govt).
8. Surya, the Sarvatma: Surya is the storehouse of all the knowledge as it is the representative of Sarvatma
i.e., the soul of the Kalapurusha. All forms are knowledge are embedded within the Atma, like a whole tree
is contained in a seed, although in a potential state. When the circumstances are right, the tree germinates
and grows into a fully grown tree, and similarly the Knowledge is revealed from the Soul. Thus when
Surya in Lagna, which the house of self-realisation is aspected by Shubha Grahas, the knowledge is
manifested, making the native a scholar. Among the aspecting Grahas, Guru is the most potent, followed
by Shukra, Chandra and Budha. Guru and Shukra are the Gurus of the Devas and Daityas respectively
and are the most knowledgeable ones. Even Maharishi Vyasa extolls this quality of Shukra by addressing
him as Sarva-shastra-pravaktaram, i.e., one who is able to eloquently narrate all the Shastras. Shastras
mean field of knowledge.
9. Neecha Surya: Valorous, inimical towards the learned, financial distress and blindness. When Surya
occupies its neecha kshetra, its Krura nature is heightened2 (as opposed to exaltation when the saumya
nature of Sun is heightened). Krura = dominating, aggressive, tamasic (like Mars). When Such Sun is
placed in the lagna it cause the native to be extremely valorous (like war planet Mars) and the native is
eager to jump onto fight under little or no pretext. His nature becomes very restless and highly egoistic. He
thinks that he is the most intelligent person in the world and end up disrespecting (and ridiculing) the men
of learning and wisdom. Such Sun give financial hardship (Sun resources gone to debility lack of
resources) and blindness (Sun = sight, sight becomes weak). The negative however is diminished when
Sun is under benefic aspects of the Jupiter and to some extent other benefic (saumya) planets.
10.Simha Surya: When Surya occupies the Simha Lagna, the royal sign of the horoscope, it bestows upon
the name, Authority and Power. Here Surya being the Lagnesha placed in the Lagna increasing the strong
influence of Royal surya on the nature of the native. The native has strong leadership qualities and he
assumes leadership positions without any resistance or hesitation.
11.Simha Surya Shubha Drsta: Devoid of diseases. When Sun is placed in its Mulatrikona sign the native is
free from diseases (caused by high heat- pitta- bile) as Leo has the ability to withstand Suns fire. However,
the freedom from ill health is granted only when Sun is under benefic influences. Affliction of Sun in Leo
by Vayu planets Saturn and Rahu breach the shield and cause diseases. Combined influence of Saturn and
Rahu can also give heart diseases (bringing the influence of Aquarius on Sun).
12.Karka Surya: Karka is benevolent sign for Surya. If Surya is the King, Chandra is the Queen as it is
ruled by the Queen. This is also the exaltation sign of Guru, indicating the Guru and Chandra energies are
very strong in this sign. The native is wise, scholarly, knowledgable but sickly. The conflict of fire and
water manifest in them eye troubles such as glaucoma and only ordinary wealth. They suffer due to boils in
the body. Surya being a fiery planet has trouble staying in watery signs- which cause boils (due to
excessive heat- pitta- bile). If Surya is under benefic influences, especially the aspect of Guru or Chandra,
the results become predominantly positive.
13.Kanya Surya: Only daughters, loses the spouse and lacks gratitude: Virgo stands for girl child, Kanya.
14.Dhanu Surya: is perhaps the best Rasi for Surya to be in. Here the native becomes a scholar,
knowledgeable in scriptures and religious texts. On the flip side, the native is devoid of happiness from
wife and children. Children is major concern for such natives, as there is no children even from many
wives. He also suffers from some or other sorrow throughout life. This position of Surya is especially good
for lawyers, judges, and those holding high and authoritative position.
15.Makara Surya: Heart diseases. Sun rules the ability to pump blood (spark in the heart causing the heard
to pump blood) and when it is placed an inimical sign Capricorn and 6th from its mulatrikona, such
natives suffer due to sluggishness of heart beat. This is heightened if Saturn and Rahu (Vayu) associate
with him. Benefic association help in keeping this under check.

When a papagraha is placed in the Lagna, it gives exceedingly negative results when it is placed in Neecha, or Shatru kshetra.

16.Meena Surya: Subservient to women. Pisces is a watery sign (relationship) and a place where Venus gets
exalted. When Sun is placed in Pisces such persons like to in company of many women and are inclined to
do things to keep them happy. Pisces is a very feminine sign and Sun so placed cause lessening of Suns
masculinity and independence.
17.Devoid of children: Being a fiery planet it does not promote child-birth (which is a Jala predominant
activity). However, this happens only when Sun is ill placed (in inimical sign or debility) and
simultaneously afflicted by malefics. The ability to bear child is seen from the 3rd and 9th arudha from
Surya lagna AS3 and AS9.
18.Talks less: Nature of the Sun is to talk less as he does not like to get into any kind of relationship (Jala)
and is neutral to the karaka for speech Mercury. Influence of Mercury or watery planets Venus, Moon on
Sun will cause the native to talk more and that of fiery planet will cause the native to talk less.
19.Wanderer: The nature of the Sun is to wander in the jungle like Lion. Also, predominance of fire cause
mobility. Due to high in energy person with strong Sun do not like to stay in one place for long. They are
usually adventurous and like to engage in travelling for adventure for instance mountain trekking.
20.Contented and happy: Lagna Surya gives contentment and happiness when Surya is comfortably placed
in exaltation, mulatrikona, own sign or friendly sign or aspected by benefics such as Jupiter and Moon
(the significator of happiness and contentment).
21.Dull witted: Surya confers sharp intelligence, but its placed in the lagna can cause a person to be dull
witted only when the fire of the Sun is doused i.e., Sun is placed in debility or other inimical signs such as
Capricorn or Aquarius. In other signs, it confers sharp intellect.
22.Shubha Drsti: Wisdom comes from Jupiter and Sun is the source of knowledge which wise people wants
to attain. Aspect or association of benefic planets Jupiter, Venus, Moon and Mercury confer wisdom
however of different nature. The highest among them is that of Jupiter.
23.Weak and afflicted: Suffers from fever and severe health troubles in the third year: When Sun is weak
(placed in debility and enemy sign) or afflicted (conjoined with or aspected by or hemmed between
malefic) or both, the native suffers due to severe health troubles (due to excessive heat) while young. Now
why 3rd year?
24.Agni kshetra Surya: Surya in fiery signs give good nature but there is trouble to the eyes. On the other
hand, Suryas placement in the even sign gives beautiful eyes. The native fond of drama or becomes a
dramatist in Airy signs and Karka, Simha, Dhanu and Makara. Its placement in Jala Rasis and Dhanu
make the native Knowledgeable and righteous. The native is glorious when Surya occupies an Agni Rasi,
Karka and Vrschika. The rise in life independently is especially predominant in Watery signs. It is
prevalent to some extent in Fiery signs. It is usually not prevalent in Earthy signs.
25.Sama-Visama Rasi: Surya is usually auspicious in even signs while somewhat inauspicious in odd signs.
The even signs are governed by the feminine principles, which help in smoothening the rough edges of
Surya, making it more gentle, calm and steady. While in the odd signs, Surya becomes extremely brilliant
and shining and its ability to burn increases manifold. Hence, it causes a lot of pain while it gives positive
results, say in the fiery signs. In The Airy signs, Surya does not give much positive results, as these signs
are governed by the Asuras, Budha, Shukra and Shani. Suryas placement in the odd signs give
Independent profession from the beginning. However its placement in the even signs give independent
profession only after initial stint of service. In Pisces it is said that the native establishes relations with
many women. However, this is usually not seen when Surya is alone. This is more likely when Surya
conjoins Shukra.
26.Influence of Tattvas: Surya in Agni Rasis makes the native Ambitious, peevish, dominating, serious and
less-spoken; while in Prthvi Rasis, the native is Arrogant, belligerent, eccentric, and giving only an
ordinary sexual drive. Surya in Vayu Rasis makes the native just, good hearted, interested in art and craft,
and religious scriptures. On the other hand, Surya in Jala rasis makes the native attached to women to the
extent that even oblivious to self-destruction.
27.Talent: Karka Lagna Surya makes the native involved in home matters. Vrschika Lagna Surya helps in
attaining success and fame in medical profession i.e., doctor, pharmacist or chemist.
5

28.Conclusion: Usually Lagna-Surya is good for growth and rise in life. Such people are self-confident,
determined, generous, having exalted thoughts, dignified, generous and genuine. On the negative side,
they deride trivial work, are hard-hearted, judgmental. The results of less children is true in odd signs, on
the other hand, Surya in the even sign in the Lagna indicate many children. Its placement in the even sign
also indicate happiness, while in the odd signs, it indicates some kind of miseries always trouble, for
instance, either lack of children or health troubles. Such people eat less when Surya is in even signs,
however they become glutton in odd signs, especially fiery signs as their digestive power is very strong.
The are fond of fighting battles from the front.

The Moon confers beneficial results, when she is joined or aspected by planets that are posited in the Rasi or
Amsa of the lord of the Lagna. The same result will follow, if she is combined with or aspected by those that are
posited in a Rasi that is owned by a friend of the lord of the lagna Drekkana.

Detailed assessment
1. Pleasant appearance: Chandra is the most handsome among the grahas. Such is his charm that he was
able to seduce the guru patni tara, to have a child from this relationship, Budha. The 27 daughters of
Daksha Prajapati is wed to Chandra, who became the 27 nakshatras through which Chandra passes
through once every day, staying with them. The most favourite among the daughters is Rohini where
Chandra gets exalted. Thos who have Chandra in the lagna give them a unique seductive ability, which is
strongest when Chandra is in Rohini. Hence Lord Krsna who was born in the Rohini Nakshatra is the
enchanter of the world, one who has the capacity to attract all the jeevatma (individual souls.)
2. Fickle mindedness: Chandra is highly changeable as it changes its phase once a day. During 15 nights of
Shukla Paksha, Chandra is seen to glow higher in its effulgence, which ends with Purnima. While during
the 15 nights of Krsna Pasha, it wanes down and becomes exceedingly darker that ends with Amavashya.
During Shukla Pasha Chandra gains strength and becomes increasingly of the nature of Guru, while in
Krsna paksha, it loses strength and increasingly becomes that of Shani. Guru is the bestower of happiness
while Shani is the bestower of sorrow. Chandra although a Saumya graha, the nature actually depends on
its Paksha Bala. Purna Chandra behaves like Guru and Kshina Chandra behaves like Shani. Nonetheless,
the principle here is that, the changeable nature of Chandra makes the native fickle minded.
3. Timidity: Chandra is a soft natured graha, hence its placement in the Lagna make the native shy away
from war, battles and conflicts. In the natural Zodiac, this is exemplified by the fact that Mangal, the god
of war gets debilitated in the Chandra Rasi Karka, and Guru, the god of peace and harmony gets exalted
in this sign. However, when Chandra is in full strength, the native does not become coward although, he
may shy away from war. In the Horoscope of Sri Krsna, who was born in Krsna Ashtami, Chandra, the
3rd lord is placed in Lagna in Exaltation, thus giving him strength. This does not made him coward, but he
was peace loving. He resorted to all means to avert the war, but when all his effort failed, he showed
exceptional courage in leading the Pandavas to the war and also lead them to victory. Thus when Chandra
is in Lagna, the native resorts to all peaceful measures before resorting to any kind of battle. The mental
weakness and cowardice manifests only when Chandra is weak.
4. Dishonesty when the Lagnesha is weak: Chandra has this quality in which it makes the native very
seductive, diplomatic and resort to nefarious means to get their work done. Since it is the karaka of mind,
it gives the native an unique ability to control others mind and mesmerise them. The native does not
usually resort to such means, when the ideals are strong. The ideals are strong when the Lagnesha is
strong and well placed in the horoscope. On the other hand, the ideals are weak and can be easily
compromised when the Lagnesha is weak and badly placed.
5. Solace from ill health and from watery places: Chandra is a Shubha graha and rules watery places.
When the native suffers ill health, strengthening the watery element will bring blessings of the mother on
the Lagna and protect against the ill health.
6. Mesha, Vrshabha, Karka: Chandra is very well placed in the mentioned three Rasis. Mesha is the Chara
and positive sign of its friend Mangal, where Surya gets exalted. Vrshabha is its Uccha as well as
Mulatrikona Rasi, while Karka is its own sign. Mangal, being the Karaka for strength, gives strength to
the mind. However, in the other sign of Mangal, Vrschika, Chandra gets into Neecha, rendering it Weak.
Hence among the two signs of Mangal, Chandra is fond of Mesha and hates Vrschika. When Chandra is
so placed, it bestows upon the native all its best qualities, thus making the native well versed in shastras,
wealthy, contended with life, looked after by the sovereign. The native is however, soft spoken, dull witted,
has a tender but strong physique. These are the nature of Chandra who is soft spoken and tender.
7. Vrshabha, Karka: Chandra in these two signs of its exaltation, Mulatrikona and Svakshetra makes the
native expert in shastras, especially when it is strong in Paksha Bala and aspected by Guru and Shukra.
However, the native may suffer due to false pride of knowledge.
8

8. Chandra is the karaka for Mind, which has a tendency of getting into negative thoughts and become
anxious. When mind gets positive support of Mangal or Guru or other Shubha Grahas, Shukra and
Budha, it counters the mental and physical weakness of the native, making him very strong, intelligent,
eloquent, endowed with good health and wealth.
9. When Chandra is weak and placed in the Lagna, the native is susceptible to health troubles. This is even
more accentuated when Lagnesha is weak and badly placed and Chandra is also conjoined with or
aspected by papagrahas, especially Shani, Rahu or Ketu. Conjunction of Surya makes Chandra weak as it
gets into Amavashya, while its opposition gives it strength as Chandra gets into Purnima. The weakness of
the Lagna and Chandra can be annulled, when they aspected by a Shubha Graha. The aspect of Guru is
the greatest protector. On the other hand when Chandra is strong in Paksha Bala and Lagnesha is well
placed, the native is protected from ill health.
10.Chandra is fond of travelling which can be seen from its willingness to travel through the zodiac,
changing one nakshatra each day. Thus when Chandra is placed in the Lagna, such native likes to travel
long distances. This is especially true when Chandra is placed in Dvisvabhava Lagnas, as then the 5th
house of fondness falls in Chara Rasi, which symbolises movement.
11.Vayu Rasi (Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha): Chandra in the Vayu Rasis Mithuna, Tula and Kumbha, the
intellectual signs, gives them a eagerness or drive to become a leader. Whether or not they eventually
become one, nonetheless they put all their effort in becoming one. However, such people can be selfish and
always think about meeting their own ends.
12.Jala Rasis (Karka, Vrschika, Meena): Chandra is highly emotional in the Jala Rasis, which represent
the feminine nature of the universe. These signs are ruled by the Deva grahas and its friends Mangal and
Guru. In these signs, Chandra becomes unbiased, just, non-judgmental and does not interfere in others
work. However, when Chandra is placed in Vrschika, it should be endowed with strong Paksha Bala, else,
the mind may suffer due to blockage of emotions.
13.Agni Rasis (Mesha, Simha, Dhanu): Fiery signs are owned by Chandras friends Mangal, Surya and
Guru. Chandra in these signs indicate balanced energies due to intermingling two complementing
principles of fire and water, male and female. Such people are stable minded, less spoken but energetic.

Few important rules:

1. Lagna Chandra usually gives a pleasant appearance and handsome body. However they are fickle minded
and cowardly.
2. In Dvisvabhava rasi, the native is fond of travelling.
3. When Lagnesha is weak, there is danger from water and the native also becomes a liar.
4. In Vrshabha and Karka, the native becomes expert in shastras, but has false pride for knowledge.
5. In the Agni Rasis, Mesha, Simha and Dhanu, the native is steady, less spoken and energetic, low sexual
drive, does not like to move much, easy angered, careless about money. Dhanu: lesser material comforts.
6. In Vrsha, Kanya, Makara: Snobbish, consider self to be above others, thinks that he is knowledgeable in all
the shastras. However, lacks courage to speak in assembly.
7. In Vayu Rasis, Mithuna, Tula and Kumbha, the native is eager attain a leadership position in life and puts
all his effort towards that. However, he could be selfish.
8. In Jala Rasis, Karka, Vrschika and Meena, the native is unbiased, just, non-judgmental and he does not
interfere in others work.
9. In Vrsha Lagna: Less material happiness, difficulties in marriage. If get married, then does not get the
worldly pleasure for long time, because the wife dies in the middle age. Since the native is usually evil
minded, he does not mind going to other women.
10.Chandra in Lagna can make one a liar, hence it becomes difficult for them to attain trust in others eyes.
The native is also eccentric.

Mangal in Lagna Bhava

Cruel, adventurous, dull-witted, short-life, honourable, courageous, sustain injuries, attractive in appearance,
fickle-minded.

Impact of Rasi placement

(1) Surya Kshetra: poor; (2) Chandra Kshetra: wealthy; (3) Svakshetra: gluttonous; (4) Budha Kshetra:
grateful, (5) Guru kshetra: famous; (6) Shukra Kshetra: illicit connection with other women, (7) Makara: blessed
with many sons and affluence; (8) Kumbha: grief-stricken, wicked and a lair.

Detailed assessment
1. Fickle-minded: In Jyotish there are two grahas who are highly fickle minded or wavering, they are
Chandra and Mangal. While Chandra symbolises frequent changes in mood, Mangal represents jumping
to conclusion very fast. Mangal represent a youth who is full of energy, one who wants to achieve great
heights in life. While Mars symbolises Masculinity, Shukra represents femininity. Sometimes the physical
prowess of Mangal predominates over the intellectual abilities governed by Guru. This means, although
Mangal takes up many activities in hand, without much prior consideration, only few of them sees the light
of completion. Mangal in the Lagna makes the person attracted to many vocations, however, only few of

10

them materialise. Whether or not one is able to complete the tasks in hand, against all odds can be seen
from the strength of lagna lord, which controls the level of determination and will power of the native.
2. Adventurous: Mangal is the god of war, hence has unrestrained courage and enthusiasm. The signs ruled
by Mangal are Mountains (Mesha) and a Deep Chasm (Scorpio). These two rasis symbolises the
adventurous nature of Manga. When Mangal is placed the lagna, it bestows on the native, its adventurous
nature. Such people are courageous, daredevil, unrestrained, fond of living abroad. In summary, they are
never afraid of trying out new things. They are pretty comfortable with uncertainties of life and they want
to make the best out of it. They are never afraid of the dark and are ever to explore what lies within.
However, such people can be greedy and selfish, as they want to gain a great deal out of life.
3. Professional avocations: Mangal rules sharp things such as a shula (lance) or a scalpel. Thus Mangal is
Lagna is is good for doctors, especially surgeons, who needs to cut open the patient to treat them. They
can attain high dexterity in hand in cutting. Depending on other indications, the native can also be a
butcher or those who deal with cutting of animals and flesh, as Mangal has no hesitation or reservation
towards witnessing blood and gore.
4. Mangal can also give success in Army or Law. The native can attain success especially as a criminal lawyer
where the natives sharp mind can work out the various possibilities of crime site investigation. Also,
Criminal law deals with murder, blood and gore which is the field of action of Mangal, hence Mangal
makes one comfortable working in that area. However, strong Mangal which is of the nature of blood and
gore is not conducive for Gurus benevolent energies. As that the brutal side of Mangal makes it debilitate
Chandra (health, body) and also makes it debilitated in Chandras sign. Guru on the other side gets exalted
in Chandras sign as its nature if quite the opposite of Mangal i.e., one that is full of benevolence and grace.
So where the gory side of Mangal prevails, Gurus energy cant prevail. Hence, although the native can
attain success as criminal lawyer when Mangal occupies the Lagna, this position is not conducive for
wealth, which is governed by Guru. However, as a Surgeon, the native can attain both fame and wealth,
since the native is curing others through his invasive methods. Hence Guru and Chandra are not negative
to the profession of a surgeon.
5. Jala signs: Mangal in Jala Lagnas can make one a sailor as Mangal likes adventure. As a sailor, the native
like to move into unknown areas, unknown lands, to discover new areas. Mangals raw masculine energy
when intermingle with the compassionate energies if the Jala rasi, it translates into drinking habits, which
makes the native forget his miseries and enjoy life.
6. Prthvi signs: Mangal in Prthvi Lagnas makes one miserly and the native saves for himself to attain success
in life. Prthvi tattva stand for stability, success and achievement.
7. Fiery signs: Mangal in Agni Lagnas increase its vitality, adventure, and its raw masculine power. In this
regard, it is strongest in Mesha, its mulatrikona sign and is the Uccha Kshetra of Surya. Such position is
good for police and army profession where the native has to use the raw and brutal masculine power to
apprehend criminals and bring justice. In Dhanu Rasi, its eagerness for justice will be strongest and the
native can become best of the criminal lawyers or even a judge. In Simha Rasi, the native can attain very
high leadership position in Army or Police.
8. Budha Kshetra, Tula: highly social, spend lavishly on friends

completion of all assignments.
2. Kuja in Lagna makes one courageous, daredevil, unrestrained, fond of living abroad, but greedy and
selfish.
3. Kuja in Lagna gives success in the professions of doctors, and specifically surgeons.
4. Kuja in Lagna is not conducive for wealth in the horoscopes of lawyers. This gives fame to criminal
lawyers but not much wealth.

6. Kuja in Prthvi Rasis, the native is miserly.
7. Kuja in Agni Rasis, the native attains success in professions such as police or army.
8. Kuja in Budha Kshetra and Tula, the native is highly social and inclined towards spending lavishly on
friends.

Detailed assessment
1. Scholar: Budha is the eternal learner in the horoscope, while Guru is the eternal teacher. Budha represents
the students within us, it makes us realise the need for learning and gaining knowledge. When Budha is
weak or afflicted in a horoscope the learning faculties is adversely affected. Thus, when Budha is placed in
the Lagna, it prods the native to learn newer things every day, a never ending cycle. No doubt such natives
become scholar and are able to quote from diverse subjects. Their memory is also incredible, if Budha is
well placed and devoid of weakness and afflictions. Budha is the natural 3rd and 6th lord and their
placement in the Lagna is known to cause Dhimanta yoga, a combination for exceptionally high intellect.
The area of knowledge where the native is interested can be known from the nature of the sign falling in
the Lagna, the graha owning the Lagna, the graha conjoining Budha in the Lagna and the graha aspecting
the Lagna. All these matters influence the learning of the native. In general the learning in a horoscope can
be seen from the influence of Rasi, Bhava and Grahas on Budha. However, when Budha associate with the
Lagna or the Lagnesha, the tendencies to learn becomes even stronger. learned in many scriptures, learned
in Jyotish shastra, learned in mantra-shastra, power to free someone from black magic
2. Children: Budha is an eunuch planet like Shani. Hencet its influence on the natives being and personality
has telling impact on the natives procreative abilities. Even signs are conducive to child birth as they
symbolise the feminine principle of the zodiac. Hence, when Budha is placed in Even signs, it does not
hinder childbirth. However, when it is placed in Mithuna, Dhanu and Kumbha, childbirth is hampered
and there could be destruction of the lineage due to absence of a male progeny. Budha in Mesha, Simha
and Tula gives only limited number of children.
3. Livelihood: Budha in odd signs can cause breaks in education, however, the native can still becomes an
author, writer or a publisher etc. Budha governs over ones formal education as well as medium of
communication such as writing, publishing, speech etc. While Budha in odd signs hampers one area i.e.,
education, it does not harm the various medium of communication. Its placement in Prthvi Rasis is
conducive for trade or business. The native achieves success as a Businessman or attain high authority in a
large firm if in service, where the native can direct sales or operations in independent capacity. Placement
of Budha in Jala Rasis is conducive for publication related areas, where the native can become a Proof
reader.
4. Overall nature: In the Jala Rasis Budha gives a very good and amicable nature. However, Vrschika is
special as Budha here makes the native although good natured, he becomes a sharp critique and uses very
harsh language in critiquing, which is typical of the nature of the sign. Budha and Mangal dont go well,
hence Budhas energy is influenced by Mangal energy, making the natives attitude harsh and belligerent.

Few important rules:

1. Budha in Lagna makes one a Scholar.

14

2. Budha in Lagna in Sama Rasis blesses the native with many children.
3. Budha in Lagna in Mithuna, Dhanu and Kumbha causes destruction of lineage (i.e., no male offspring).
4. Budha in Lagna in Mesha, Simha and Tula blesses the native with only limited children and makes one
earn his livelihood through writing.

to become an author, writer or a publisher.
6. Budha in Lagna in Prthvi Rasis gives success as a businessman. If the native is in service instead, he
occupies a position which gives him high level of decision making authority and independence i.e., he
works in a big firm or in high capacity.
7. Budha in Lagna in Jala Rasi, gives success in publication industry, as a proof reader etc. The native is
usually humble and good natured.
8. Budha in Vrschika Lagna makes the native a tough critique who uses harsh language in critiquing.

(1) Surya kshetra: commander of an army, (2) Chandra kshetra: blessed with wife, wealth and children, (3)
Kuja kshetra: having efficient friends(?), (4) Budha kshetra: commanding a vast following or good clothes, (5)
Svakshetra: governor of a province, (6) Shukra kshetra: having wealth and happiness and owner of much gold(?);
(7) Shani kshetra: ???

Detailed assessment
1. General results: Guru is significator for wealth, children and knowledge. Its placement in the lagna make
the native highly talented and virtuous. The native has a pleasant face, endowed with long life, and are
wise. Although Jupiter is auspicious in lagna, native faces many hurdles in life, which the native is able to
withstand. The native is virtuous and talented (sarva-guna-sampanna) and enjoy good health.
2. Guru in Svakshetra in Lagna Bhava usually cause troubles in 6, 12, 18 etc, which are multiples of 6 years.
The troubles are usually in the area of financial distress. There could be suffering due to loss of one of the
parents in childhood.
3. Professions such as army, police, taxation etc., which are governed by Mangal or Shani are not conducive
for natives with Guru in the Lagna. This is because Guru becomes weak in the matters ruled by the
mentioned Grahas. In the Natural zodiac, Guru gets debilitated in Shanis Kshetra where Mangal becomes
exalted. The natives can attain success in professions that are to do with teaching and training, i.e., those
deal with Guru or Chandra. Footnote: Taxation is governed by Shani. Army and Police is governed by
Mangal.
4. Agni Rasis Guru: Guru in Lagna is best placed in Agni Rasis. Such people are generous, persevering,
charitable, philanthropic. They do many charitable work for the benefit of mankind. They are highly
knowledgeable and they are considered wise by others even without much formal education. Only
negative trait of this placement is that the native is somewhat conceited. They have high perception of their
self worth and they consider themselves to be higher and exalted compared to others. They attain success
and fame in training, teaching, judge, singing, poetry etc. In Mesha and Simha, the native has Childbirth
in middle age as Guru rules one of the Dusthanas i.e., Vyaya and Randhra. Guru in Dhanu is not
conducive for childbirth; such natives may not have any children, unless there other counter yogas.
5. Prthvi Rasi Guru: Guru in Prthvi Rasi makes one selfish and conceited. However this position is good for
healers, Ayurvedic, naturopathy practitioners and lawyers. In Vrshabha and Kanya, the native is devoid of
15

worldly comforts, stubborn, selfish and egoistic. In Makara, the native is fond of music, singing, theatre,
acting, reading etc.
6. Protective shield: Guru is the most benevolent graha in the horoscope and being the Karaka for the
2-5-9-10-11 it has much to give where it is placed or aspects. Gurus placement in the Lagna is outstanding
as it has the ability to block all misfortunes from touching the native. The native may suffer problems in
life but they are within the tolerance limit of the native.
7. Character: While Guru protects the native from all evils and misfortune, the character of the native
depends to a large extent on the intermingling of the energies of the Graha, Bhava ownership of the graha,
Lagna Rasi and Lagna Rasyadhipati. For instance for Shukra Kshetra Lagna, Gurus ideals are not very
compatible with that of Shukra, causing conflict and Shukra not accepting the exalted character. For
Vrshabha Lagna, Guru is the Randhresha, hence, its placement in here gives many negative traits of the
Randhra Bhava i.e., back-biting, criticising, talking behind the back etc. For Tula Lagna, Guru is the
Sahajesha and Shastesha. Although Gurus placement here gives excellent intellect but the native is always
eager to fight and win battles.
8. Wealth: Guru is the karaka for wealth as it is the Bhava Karaka for all the wealth giving Bhavas, Dhana,
Labha, Putra or Bhagya. So when it is placed in the Lagna, Guru should bestow abundant wealth on the
native. Now, is that true for all the Lagnas, or there are variations based on the different Lagnas? For Agni
Rasis and Jala Rasis, Guru becomes the lord of a Trine, hence its placement in the Lagna is excellent for
wealth and prosperity. However, for other Lagnas, it depends on the functional nature of Guru. For
Kumbha Lagna, Guru becomes the lord of Dhana and Labha Bhava, hence its placement in the Lagna in
Kumbha is excellent; even more as Guru in Kumbha Rasi is akin to its exaltation (vide Varahamihira).
However, for Makara Rasi, Guru is the Sahajesha and Vyayesha, and its placement in the Lagna in
Neecha, is not at all conducive to wealth and prosperity. Guru gives low or mediocre wealth in Shukra
kshetra as well as Kanya, falling in Lagna.
9. Eating: Guru being the karaka for the Dhana Bhava and being the nourisher of the zodiac influences the
nature of eating. When Guru is placed in Chandra Kshetra, Chandras Uccha or Neecha Kshetra, or
Kanya makes the native a glutton who does not know where to stop.
10.Relationship and marriage: There are possibilities of either two marriages, or no marriage. Guru in
Chara Lagna gives many troubles pertaining to marriage and relationships. In Sthira Lagnas, the native
attains happiness and bliss in marriage, and the wife is virtuous. In Dvisvabhava Rasis, the native has
relationship with women of old age but of good descent.
11.Inauspicious results: When Guru is conjoined or aspected by Papagrahas especially Shani or the Nodes,
the results are predominately inauspicious. Guru also gives many challenges in life results in Mesha,
Mithuna, Karka and Kanya, as the native expectations from the native is very high, to remain pure. In
signs other than the mentioned 4 signs, the native has a big forehead (sign of a pandit), joyful nature, and
they communicate with a peculiarly noticeable expression.
12.Vayu Rasis: When Guru is in a Vayu Rasi in the Lagna, the native is unbiased, has friendship, love and
affection towards everyone, is always helping everyone, engaged in doing justice, free from worries and
financial troubles. In Mithuna and Tula Rasi the native has fair complexion and is endowed with good
health. In Mithuna Rasi, the native suffers misery in early part of life, and attains happiness in later part.
13.Jala Rasis: When Guru is in a Jala Rasi, the native is free from anxiety and is endowed with abundant
wealth. This position is especially good for doctors. Guru in Meena Lagna bestows on the native a broad
world view, and makes him a linguist, grammarian, author or a novelist
14.Shukra Kshetra Lagna: Guru in Shukra Kshetra Lagna make the native lustful, secretive in sexual habits
and his sexual behaviour is hardly known to the outside world. He has a joyful nature and has peculiar
expression in his interaction with the outside world.
15.Shani Kshetra Lagna: Guru in Shani Kshetra Lagna make the native show sentiments on undeserving
matters, has a false ego. Such native attains happiness from either children or wealth.

16

16.Svakshetra Lagna: Guru in Svakshetra Lagna make contented but face difficulties in every 6th year i.e.,
6-12-18. However the troubles never go beyond control and there is protection from all danger and
misfortune etc.
17.Puritan lifestyle: Guru conjoined with Chandra in the Lagna can give some inauspicious results, as seen
in the life of Lord Sri Rama. Guru in Uccha Kshetra or conjunction with Mangal or Shukra seek high
purity from the native. In such cases, if the Lagnesha is weak or afflicted, the native is evil natured, sinful,
enjoys illicit relationships, and suffers many danger and misfortune as a result. Guru in the Lagna can be
very punishing if the native fails to follow a puritan lifestyle.

Vashistha: Happy, full of bright splendour. Fearful!
Garga: Poet, Singer, handsome, pure hearted, charitable, fond of food made out of clarified butter (ghee), honoured

happiness at childhood, suffers due to rumours. Heave suffering on the enemies. Receive honour and wealth from the king.
Jataka Kalanidhi: Suffer pains when aspected by papagrahas. Immediate destructions of all danger in natives
life. Steady disposition, matured outlook, honoured by everyone.
Vrhadyavanajataka: Scholar, honoured by the king, intelligent, full of gratitude, highly charitable, handsome

Jagesvara: Respected and loved by people, endowed with good food, body is strong, gentle and pleasant. Introverted,
i.e., does not express whats going on in his mind.
Punjaraja: Fond of sweet things, helps everyones, truthful and sweet speech.
Narayana: In signs besides Makara, the native is either a king (highly influential) or highly wealthy.
Harivamsa: Influential like a king, scholarly, endowed with conveyances and comforts of life, patient, intelligent,
born in a known and reputed family, virtuous, free from enmity towards others, fair complexioned, pleasant, endowed
with a good wife, long-lived, free from diseases.
Tattvapradeepjataka: Graha in Neecha Rasi spoils all its auspicious results. When a graha is Uccha but
occupies Trikasthana, even then it spoils all its auspicious results. Guru destroys the results of where its placed. However,
whichever Bhava Guru aspects, that Bhava attains prosperity. Shani protects the Bhava where its placed. On the other
hand Shanis aspect is highly dangerous, wherever it falls it destroys the results of that Bhava. Note: I think the
proposition that Guru spoils the Bhava where its placed can apply to only the specific position of Guru in
Dusthana, while attaining Uccha.

17

failure is heavily punished.
18

26.When in Karka or Conjunction with Mangal or Shukra, the native is prompted towards a negative path.
If there are other papa influences, the native can become evil natured, sinful, have illicit relationships, and
suffer from danger and misfortune.

Modification of Results due to Bhava ownership of Guru:

For different Lagnas, Guru becomes the lord of various Bhavas. When it becomes the lord of a Susthana
(Kendra, Kona), all the positive results of Guru-Lagna yoga will be felt in totality.
When Guru becomes the lord of a Dusthana and placed in the Lagna, the Dusthana effects will not be that
grave as Guru protects from all Arista (danger). It can however, influence the Svabhava (nature) of the native.

Detailed assessment
1. Pleasant face: After Chandra Shukra is the next seductive graha in the zodiac. Both Chandra and Shukra
are the Jala grahas and are significator for relationships. All relationships are created by the Jala Tattva,
of which Chandra and Shukra are significators. When Shukra occupies the Lagna Bhava, the native has a
pleasant and attractive face, which seduces or pulls others towards the native. They are fully loved by the
opposite sex as Shukra is also the karaka of Sexual act. It prompts and prods two individuals to get into a
sexual act, hence no doubt it gives a attractive face as well as attractive physical features in the native.
2. Shukra is the graha governing relationship and sex. Hence when it is placed in the Lagna, the native
becomes passionate, and highly adept in sexual matter. Shukra is a teacher (asura guru) and teaches how
to attain material happiness in this material world. On the other hand, Guru teaches how to attain bliss in
19

the spiritual world. Shukra is the Karaka for sex and its name means Semen. Hence it rules the sexual
potency in individuals. When Shukra is badly placed in a horoscope, with Shani, Budha influencing the
Lagna, the native suffers due to impotence.
3. Another name for semen in Sanskrit is Virya which also means strength and prowess. Hence Shukra
also relates to the strength and physical prowess of the native. In ancient times, there was a tradition of
watching Shukras rising in the eastern sky to judge the likelihood of victory in battle. Hence, the sexual
potency of a person is also related to the physical strength and good health of the native. It is often seen
that one with good health also has a good and productive sex life, which is also a key element of marital
success and happiness in life. Weak Shukra is usually seen in the horoscopes of Sadhus who have
renunciated sex. In fact, Shukra in the 8th house is also known as Sadhu yoga, and is commonly found in
the horoscope of the monks and spiritual saints.
4. Shukra rules everything that soothes others, bring others closer to the native. Hence, the native becomes
easily adapt in various art forms such as music, sketching and painting, should there be other yogas
supporting it. Shukra is adept in various forms of knowledge (sarva-shastra-pravaktaram), which gives
happiness, comforts and luxuries in this world. Native with Shukra in the Lagna can become adept in
some or other art forms, especially when it is associated with other Jala elements. The nature of the art
form can be seen from the Rasi and Graha influencing the Shukra through conjunction or aspects. For
instance Moon influence can give singing or poetry; Budhas influence can give mimicry or writing; Gurus
influence can give knowledge of the Shastras, writing books etc.
5. The Grahas occupying the Lagna is that prevails in the life of the native, more than other grahas. This
is because the influence of the graha occupying the Lagna has the ability to block or allow other influences
to reach the native. There is often growth of the significations of the graha occupying the Lagna, as the
native is very receptive to the significations of this graha. If the Graha is endowed with strength i.e., it is
placed in its Sva, Uccha, Mulatrikona, Mitra Kshetra and Shubha Madhya, the positive significations of
the Grahas manifest more in the natives life. On the other hand, if the Graha is in bad avastha i.e., placed
in its Neecha, Shatru Kshetra and also in Papa madhya, the negative influences manifests. So when
positive influence of Shukra manifests on the Lagna, the native can be a enchanter, while negative
influence of Shukra can make the person indulge in indiscriminate sex with multiple partners, or even
prostitutes.
6. Nonetheless, Shukra in the Lagna can cause more than one marriage as Shukra carries the energies of
the 7th house, it being the Karaka of that house. So when the 7th house significations rises in the Lagna,
the number of marriage also grows. However, it is dangerous to reach a conclusion by looking at just one
grahas as multiple factors are involved in deciding the tendencies of the natives mind and his behaviour.
Guru involving in the matters of marriage by being the ruler, occupant or aspecting graha of the key
houses ruling Marriage, it promotes chastity, one marriage and commitment in the marriage. Hence when
Guru aspects or establishes sambandha with Shukra, 7th house or 7th lord, it is rarely possible to have
more than one marriage.
7. Shukra is the most beautiful graha in the horoscope. It governs everything pertaining to beauty,
symmetry, harmony in the nature. Hence it is made the key graha governing femininity. It has now become
widely known that While men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. The natives who are under
strong influence of Shukra often gravitate towards some art and craft very early in life. Thus, such native
can attain success as poets, artists, dramatists, scriptwriters, writers etc. In their art and composition, one
observe the stamp of Shukra, which is highly passionate, seductive and that attracts. Shukra being the
karaka for beauty, is also a perfectionist and thus has less tolerance towards unkempt, unclean and
disorganised things, of which Shani is the Karaka. Thus, even though Shani and Shukra are good friends,
their nature are completely the opposite. While Shukra natives always like to adorn with good dresses,
ornaments etc. those influence by Shani likes to stay in soiled clothes and have an unkempt appearance.
8. Shukra in Agni Lagnas, although cause delay in marriage, however they get a loving and good natured
wife. Agni Rasis are purifying but harsh. Shukra is a Jala graha and it is inimical towards the Agni Tattva.
Jala either douses agni, or agni changes the Jala to Vayu tattva. Hence they work against each others
sustenance. Having said that, creation happens when Agni and Jala are brought together, in the form of
male and female principles. Although there is conflict with this coming together of two tattvas, causing
delay in marriage, but this promises chastity in the matters of Shukra i.e., relationship. For Mesha, Shukra
is the Dhanesha and Daresha, for Simha Lagna, Shukra is the Sahajesha and Karmesha and for Dhanu
20

Lagna, Shukra is the Shastesha and Labhesha. While for Mesha Lagna, Shukra is a maraka, while for the
other two lagnas, Shukra is a Trishadhayadhipati. Since Shukra is not a functional benefic for the Agni
Lagnas, its placement in the Lagna can cause delay in marriage. However, due to its placement in
purifying signs, the marriage turns out to be auspicious, and the native attains a loving and caring wife.
9. While the Agni Rasis are purifying, Agni being governed by Surya; the Vayu Rasis are corrupting as it
is governed by Shani. All the Vayu Rasis are governed by the Asuras and thus are friendly towards
Shukra. Unlike the Devas, the Asuras are fond of indulging in material happiness (iha loka sukha), there
are some negativities associated with such placement of Shukra. While the good placement of Shukra in
these signs promise a good looking and loving wife, the native is hardly satisfied with his own wife or
committed to marriage. The natives are inclined towards indulging in extra marital misadventures and thus
end up having illicit relationship with other women. For all the Vayu Lagnas, Shukra is one of the
Trikonadhipati, thus is highly auspicious. While this auspiciousness grants a good wife, it also opens the
floodgates for excessive passion and indulgence. Gurus influence on the factors of relationship can help in
curbing the excessive passion.
10.For Vrsha Lagna, Shukra is the Lagnesha as well as Shastesha. Hence its placement in the Lagna, being
the Shastesha in own house, although can give marriage, but Shukra being the lord of enemies also bring
some discord in marital life. The principle here is that, wherever the lord of enemies are placed, it will
indicate enmities, conflict etc, pertaining to its occupied Bhava, the source of which can be traced back to
the natural significations of the graha owning the Shatru Bhava. Here Shukra becomes the owner of the
Shatru Bhava, hence the discord and conflicts can originate from the matters of spouse, relationship etc.
Placement of the Shatru-adhipati in the Lagna indicate some conflict troubles the native all the time.
However, Lagnesha placed in own Bhava indicate that the conflicts will never go out of hand.
11.In Kanya Rasi, Shukras behaviour is different from Mithuna Rasi. While Mithuna is full of libido as its
name suggests, Kanya is pure with complete absence of the sexual passion and libido. It represents a state
where a girl has not attained the state of puberty and is extremely pure. Kanya or young girls are often
worshipped Durga puja, in the form of Kanya Puja to show respect to this aspect of femininity. When
Shukra is placed in Kanya Lagna, in debility, being the Dharmesha (and also Dhanesha), it restrains the
sexual indulgence of the native. Shukra being keeper of righteousness (Dharma) for this Lagna, will not
allow promiscuity. The neecha avastha of Shukra indicate that its significations of sexuality has not started
to bloom. The Neecha becomes troublesome, when such Shukra is conjoined or aspected by papagrahas
(especially Shani, Mangal, Rahu), as them it can give weakness in sexual character. On the other hand
aspect of Shubha Graha and Lagnesha Budha in strength would indicate that the native is free from the
shackles of passion and sex drive.
12.Makara is the place of debility of Guru and exaltation of Mangal. It is an extremely aggressive and
passionate sign due to the strong expression of masculinity (Mangal). For this Lagna, Shukra becomes an
yogakaraka being the owner of Suta and Karma Bhava. Here shukra carries the duty of love (suta) and
duty (karma). Hence, placement of Shukra in this Lagna also brings influence of love and duty on the
Lagna. But Shani being the owner of this sign are some negative indications. Shani is the karaka for delay
and ugliness, thus Shukras placement here can indicate delay in marriage and that the wife is not very
beautiful. However, the occupation of Shukra as Sutesha and Karmesha promises strong love and affection
between the couples, and there is righteous conduct in the relationship. Shanis influence on Shukra makes
the native somewhat shy, and he does not express his love openly.

Detailed assessment
1. Lagna is the neecha rasi and marana karaka sthana for Saturn. Hence its placement in the Lagna bhava
is not considered positive. The natural and functional significations of Saturn suffer unless there are some
fortification for Saturn. The situation usually differ for different Lagnas as different signs provide different
level of support to Saturn. For instance if Saturn is placed in Aries lagna, its behaviour and results are
very different compared to placement in Li, Cp or Aq lagnas, mainly because Saturn is weak and defeated
in Ar while it gains strength in Li, Cp or Aq due to exaltation or being in own sign.
2. Like any other malefic, their placement in the lagna is a win-lose situation. While it causes gain to the
signification of the Graha, lagna being a Kendra and a Subha bhava, the signification of the Bhava takes a
hit, unless the bhava lord is placed in strength elsewhere or under benefic influences.
3. Saturn is the governor of 6-8-12, hence its placement in the lagna normally brings diseases (6H), vices,
weaknesses- moral or physical (8H) or losses (12H) to the Lagna i.e., natives self-identity. Consequently,
depending on the signs Lagnas Saturn makes the native given to vices such as drinking alcohol, eating
meat-eater, addicted to prostitution etc. A lot depends on the sign where Saturn is placed. For instance in
Ve and Mo signs, Saturn can give alcoholism. In Le it can give meat-eating habits.
4. Being the governor of the 8H, it brings a lot of misery to the life of native. However, natives who are not
given to the temptations of Saturn and are disciplined, they are blessed by positive attributes of Saturn i.e.,

misery in childhood mostly due to separation from the near or dear ones or health troubles. However being

determination and grit and eventually attain success in later part of life. However the native can highly
selfish due to Tamas energy of Saturn which cause the native to focused only on self improvement. The
Aspect of Saturn on the 10H also promises eventual success. One should befriend them with caution.
6. Saturns aspect on the 7H aspect affect the area of relationship. 7H is the house of Dikbala of Saturn
and is also the Uccha Bhava. However, since Saturn is in a bad state in the Lagna, it is usually not
conducive for the matters of the house it is aspecting Either no marriage or wife is sickly. Wife usually
predeceases the native. The opposite is true when Saturn is in the 7H i.e., the native predeceases the
native.

native and this makes the body of the native is rough and cold.

also become a revolutionary due to lack of faith in worn out customs and traditions. The person is highly
sociable and attain fame. This is because, the native is disciplined and persistent in his effort in pursuing
what he believes is right.

Detailed assessment
1. Rahu is the kingmaker according to the Shastras. When Rahu is strong and positive in a horoscope, it
has the ability to catapult someone born in humble circumstances to king-hood. Rahu gives subtle abilities
to assess someones strengths and weaknesses and adapt ones behaviour in accordance to that. It teaches
very high level diplomacy and hence is always a winner in battles. It does not like to fight war in a battle
field like Mangal and Ketu, but like to use its supreme intellect to fight the battle with wit.
2. According to Vaidyanatha when Rahu is placed in Lagna in Simha, it grants Kingly status. The two
signs which represents Kingly status are Simha and Mesha as this is where Surya attains Svakshetra and
Uccha respectively.
3. According to some, Rahu in 3 Bhu-loka rasi Mesha, Vrshabha and Karka, acts like a shield in the
horoscope and protect the native from all dangers. It has the ability to remove all kinds of suffering from
natives life and give success and prosperity. Thus, if native is born in humble circumstances, he eventually
attains success and prosperity.
4. Rahu is a Krura Graha and like any other Krura Graha, placement of Rahu in the Lagna should cause the
Karakatva of Lagna to suffer, unless Rahu is placed in an auspicious sign. Thus, Garga gives negative
results for this placement of Rahu in a horoscope. He says that this Rahu makes one diseased, disabled,
ugly appearance, wicked and lack righteousness. However, Rahu bestows his own characteristics, making
the native highly courageous and having reddish eyes. The native has an unkempt appearance, ugly nails
etc. However, he also agrees that in some places Rahu can grant much wealth and expensive metals such
as gold. These places are Simha, Karka and Mesha. Simha and Karka are ruled by Royal Grahas Surya
and Chandra while Mesha is a royal sign as Surya attains Uccha here.

Whichever Bhava Rahu is placed in the horoscope, usually there is a black mark in that body part.
26

wealth, strength, it also gives diseases on the upper part of the body.

have strong sexual drive, becomes victorious in arguments and debates.
8. Usually the native is very proud of his lineage, very talkative or rather very apt in talking based on the
circumstances i.e., he is able to persuade others easily. In inauspicious signs, it gives many diseases,
especially in the head region. This is especially true when Rahu is conjoined with another malefic or be
aspected by one and devoid of benefic aspects.

capable in persuading people to help them and do their work. They are seen to rise very high in life, due to

Ketu in Lagna Bhava

Detailed assessment
1. Ketu is the fiercest graha in the horoscope. It represents the trunk of the demon Rahu whose head was
severed by lord Vishnu during the episode where the Devas were given the Amrita. Although the head was
severed, but as the Amrita already went in their body, that could not be destroyed. From then on both
Rahu and Ketu were given the status of Grahas and are also worshipped. Unlike Rahu, who is akin to
Shani, Ketu is akin to Mangal. The saying goes Shanivat Rahu, Kujavat Ketu. Mars stands for fire, hence
Ketu is also fiery. However Ketus fire is of extreme temperature and it burns instantly. If Mangal stands
for the Red colour, Ketu stands for infra-red colour. Whichever Bhavas and Grahas conjoin with Ketu that
suffers from the excessive heat of Ketu. Ketus association usually gives both physical and mental suffering,
attacks and injuries etc. Hence when Ketu is placed in the Lagna, it is generally considered inauspicious.
2. The headlessness of Ketu signify suddenness, randomness and chaos. It makes it the most unpredictable
graha in the horoscope, something like the comets, whose paths are extremely unpredictable. On the
contrary the steadiest among all the grahas is Surya. Thus the matters connected with Ketu because highly
unpredictable. Usually such significations have many highs and lows in life, somewhat like a roller coaster.
The Bhava significations connected with Ketu can suffer the extremes.
3. True to the nature of Ketu, its placement in Lagna gives an eccentric nature. The native is usually
disconnected from the real world. Rahu and Ketu represents the complete opposite nature. While Rahu
indicates a thinker, who likes to use his big head to evaluate all possible pros and cons, and the outcome of
an activity, Ketu is quite the opposite. Ketu is highly intuitive and jumps into an action without much prior
thinking.
4. Ketus high energy level cause the energy to fluctuate very high, somewhat like a Volcano. When Ketu
occupies the Lagna or conjoins with the Lagnesha, such natives becomes highly anxious under trivial
matters and suffer from nervousness. Their speech and thinking is usually impulsive and suffer extremities
of moods. They can have uncontrollable fits of anger and also uncontrolled emotional outbursts when
Lagnesha and Mantra Bhava are also weak.
5. When Lagnesha is weak, the ideals are low. Under such circumstances when Ketu occupies the Lagna,
the native is not able to control his speech and ends up responding just randomly without much prior
thoughts. The native can also become liar, especially when Lagnesha is weak.
6. The graha occupying the Lagna indicate the influences coming on the Lagna. The influences can come
in many different ways, including in the form of people. Ketu represents terrorists, thieves and outcaste
from the society. When Ketu occupies the Lagna, the native comes in the contact of such people, which
can corrupt natives thinking and personality, unless Lagnesha is strong to make the native steadfast in his
principles. This is however a positive indication if the native is on the spiritual path as Ketu represents
monks and ascetics as well. This indicates that the influence of the monks and ascetics on the native. Ketu
when aspected by Guru brings Ketus uncontrolled impulses under control and channelise the high energy
on the right path. Such people can progress very fast in the path of spirituality. On the other hand when
Guru conjoin with Ketu, Ketu can affects Gurus calm demeanour, causing mental unrest, hence not
conducive, unless their are other positive factors supporting it. Ketu in Gurus sign also comes under
gurus influence, and give success in the spiritual path.
7. Lagna stands for what defines the native. The matters of the Lagna help answering the question such as
(1) Where are you born (2) which lineage or dynasty you belong to, (3) What is your culture (4) what is
your social background etc. When Ketu occupies the Lagna, it causes disruption to everything that defines
the background of the native, including native place, his kinsmen, his culture etc. It is likely that the native
develops hatred towards the background in which he is born and steadily moves away from it. Ketu is a
separative graha, hence it separates the natives identity from the native.
8. Ketu in the Lagna can afflict the body due to its high heat, making the person sickly, usually during
childhood. The native can develop pains in the entire body, suffer from extreme heat such as boils, skin
troubles, acne, skin eruptions, high fever, hyper acidity, heartburn, colic and stomach ulcers etc. The native

29

should eat food that soothes the high pitta (fire, bile), those which are endowed with high Kapha (Jala,
water, phlegm, mucus).
9. The matters pertaining to family, relationship, happiness, prosperity, children, spouse etc. are all
governed by Jala Tattva (water element) and the grahas ruled by this tattva viz., Chandra and Shukra.
The Agni tattva (fire element) is always in conflict with the Jala Tattva. Ketu being of the nature of
extreme fire, its occupation of the Lagna causes troubles pertains to the matters governed by the Jala
Tattva. It can cause suffering to the natives life due to early death of spouse and other miseries. It can also
cause suffering due to breakage of many other relationships in the persons life.
10.Surya is closely connected to the Chaya grahas Rahu and Ketu when they occupy the Lagna. When
Rahu is placed in the Lagna, Surya behaves akin to its debility. On the other hand, when Ketu occupies
the Lagna, Surya behaves akin to its exaltation. Rahu is extremely cold graha, hence its placement in the
Lagna cause Lagna Karaka Surya to lose its power. On the other hand when Ketu occupies the Lagna,
who is embodiment of extreme fire, Lagna karaka Surya gains power. The matters pertaining to Lagna are
predominantly governed by Agni Tattva, which is symbolised by Surya being the Karaka. This is
secondarily governed by Prthvi and Akasha Tattva, hence Budha and Guru attains Dikbala here.
11.Ketu in Lagna bestows its nature to the native when it occupies the Lagna. Ketus nature in the
material plane is highly fierce, cruel, agitated, highly changeable, impulsive, lack emotions and empathy
and also lack gratitude towards his well wishers. It however becomes different in the spiritual plane, where
the native does not hesitate to break free from the bondage of societal norms, think differently, shed the
material bondages and become free. Ketu can make one a true aghora mystic who are beyond all societal
norms and are not deluded by the material world. They give away a luxurious and comfortable life, to
embrace a life that is harsh but free from delusion. For spiritual aspirants, the deity governing over Ketu,
Ganesha takes control of the natives destiny and slowly progress him into the path of high spirituality and
spiritual attainments (sides). Ketus nature is extreme, hence, when it leads one to spirituality, it causes
extreme pain in the persons life, to help him coming out of the delusion of the material world (Rahu), to
become free (Ketu).
