UNIT 3 Research Project 1
I am very interested and educated in research fields of sciences and so many of my career
options are based around them. After going through the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, the
careers that intrigued me the most were Biochemist (profess. & kin.), Biomedical Engineer
(profess. & kin.), Neurologist (medical ser.), Aeronautical Project Engineer (aircraft mfg.). I
have already kept these titles as goal careers and so finding them there was a simple passage
into knowing a little more.
Biochemists, which conduct research to determine action of foods, drugs, serums,
hormones, and other substances on tissues and vital processes of living organisms; isolate,
analyze, and identify hormones, vitamins, allergens, minerals, and enzymes and determine
effects on body functions, is one of my ultimate career choices which I have prepared and
planned for since my sophomore year. Some of the best schools offering the degree for this
certain profession are the University of CaliforniaBerkeley Berkeley, CA, the Scripps
Research Institute La Jolla, CA, and the University of WisconsinMadison Madison, WI.
The amount of time it would take to acquire a masters degree within this field would take
around 5-7 years of a molecular biology and biochemistry program including the amount it
takes to achieve a bachelors degree. To get a PhD, you must take up to eight years studying
in a graduate program.

Biomedical Engineers, which conduct research into biological aspects of humans or

other animals to develop new theories and facts, or test, prove, or modify known theories of
life systems, and to design life-support apparatus, utilizing principles of engineering and
bio-behavioral sciences: plan and conduct research concerning behavioral, biological,
psychological, or other life systems. Again, to achieve a major and education for this
profession you would need to accomplish a masters degree or PhD in biomedical sciences,
which are well-offered in some universities: Carnegie Mellon University and Columbia
University.
My other main career goal is to become a neurologist. A neurologist diagnoses and
treats organic diseases and disorders of nervous system: orders and studies results of
chemical, microscopic, biological, and bacteriological analyses of patient's blood and
cerebrospinal fluid to determine nature and extent of disease or disorder; identify presence
of pathological blood conditions or parasites and prescribes and administers medications
and drugs. The universities that offer PhDs and masters degrees for this field are Stanford,
Colombia, UCLA, John Hopkins, and UC San Francisco.
Aeronautical Project Engineers Directs and coordinates activities of personnel
engaged in designing mechanisms, structures, systems, and equipment for aeronautical or
aerospace products, applying knowledge of engineering theory and technology: Reviews and
evaluates product request from customer, and formulates conceptual design to meet
customer requirements. Analyzes project proposal to determine feasibility, producibility,
cost, and production time, and discusses proposal with customer representatives, engineers,
and other personnel. Assigns project personnel to specific aspects or phases of project, such
as analysis, development, or design. Evaluates product design for conformance to

engineering principles, customer requirements, quality standards, and specifications.

Evaluates and approves design changes and drawing releases. Coordinates design,
production, testing, and related activities. Consults with project personnel and others to
provide technical assistance and information. This career was not one of my first choices
but it has begun to interest me lately. Like every other profession here I would have to get a
masters degree or a PhD to be employed. The universities with the best programs for this
field are MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, CALTECH, and Harvard.
From all that I can get, I am very interested in the human mind and anything that is
still beyond our reach of comprehension. I am very educated and interested in biology and
psychology but I would also like to understand physics, especially quantum physics. Being
able to have these careers as options is helpful because now I have a medium to construct
what I wish to do in my future.
