Introduce the subject of fractions by
providing a display of magnetic
fraction tile manipulatives on the
whiteboard. THe teacher will engage
the students by referencing their
memory of prior knowledge such as:
Do you remember studying fractions
in other grades? Do you think that
you ever use fractions in real life?
Allow some time for oral expression
and conversation with the class.
After establishing the introduction,
announce that I am going to test
your knowledge. I will provide a
simple short worksheet
(assessment) of fractions. This
worksheet will present pictures of
pie graphs that is purposely geared
as a visual trigger for representation

of fractions. The students will need

to write the fraction for each graph.
The goal of this is to establish a
relationship for students from what
they already know and to connect it
to where we are going to go with
fractions as fourth graders.

To Hook the lesson of fractions, I will

read a book called, Full House by
Dayle Ann Dodds. It is a fun,
whimsical book that is an invitation
to fractions. While this book may be
way below level, it is a great way to
incorporate reading even with math.
Also, by reading a book about math
it is teaching and reinforcing
reading, oral expression through
classroom conversation,
comprehension, and is a creative
way to implement cross-curricular
teaching any subject.
The class will go over the Powerpoint
on Adding and Subtracting Fractions.
TTW provide an adding example on
slide number 14.

TSW get into small groups and

receive some of the magnetic
fraction manipulatives used in the
beginning of class. The students will
collaborate and try to create as
many different fractions as possible.
TTW observe each group, giving
assistance as necessary if any
groups are stumped.
Near the end of the activity, each
group will choose two to three of
their favorite fractions they created
and draw them on the

whiteboard/SMARTboard. This allows

the students to be exposed to more
fractions they may not have thought
of in their own group.
Differentiation: The students will use
their own creativity to further their
understanding of fractions and
ultimately become more familiar
with the concept.

Use this as a review for the students
who are having a hard time grasping
the concept. You can also give
students time in class to work on
this.

*The time is merely a suggestion based on a 45-55 minute period of time (normally middle school and high school).
Elementary school schedule depends on the subject. ELA/Reading is normally no less than a 90 minute block of
time.
