Module 2
Introduction
As a future teacher in the general classroom, I will encounter many students and
situations of diverse backgrounds. It is my professional responsibility as a future teacher to
understand and put the TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 competencies
into effect. Being aware of the 13 competencies and how to use them will make you a more
effective teacher. In this paper I will be relating competencies 3, 4, and 8 to chapters 4,5, and 6 in
Teaching and Learning Research-Based Methods fifth edition by Donald P. Kauchak and Paul D.
Eggen (2012).
Planning for Learning
`

Competency 003 is the ability for teachers to understand procedures for designing

effective and coherent instruction and assessments based on appropriate learning goals and
objectives. This competency is greatly associated with chapter four in the book because in this
chapter the author covers teacher planning and lesson planning. In chapter four of the book the
author identifies all aspects of a lesson and every step the teacher needs to prepare for. After
reading this chapter I now have a clearer understanding of how to design an effective lesson,
exactly what competency 003 is covering.
Effective teaching

Competency 004 states that teachers understand the learning process and factors that
impact student learning. Chapter five follows closely with this competency due to the fact that
the author covers effective teaching and that is exactly what competency 004 is outlining. The
author gives us a close look into effective teaching by outlining classroom climate and the
concept of time. Teachers need to be aware of time whether its instructional time, engaged time,
or academic learning time and they also need to be able to create a learning environment suitable
for students success. When teachers have complete awareness of time and classroom
environment their teaching will be more effective.
Increasing Learning through Student Involvement
Competency 008 states that teachers will provide appropriate instruction that actively
engages students in the learning process. I have chosen to relate this competency with chapter six
in the book because in chapter six the author includes how to be an effective teacher while
including student involvement. In more depth, the author covers using technology, increasing
learner motivation, and elements of effective questioning. Once completing the reading for
chapter six it is well defined on how to achieve increasing learning through student involvement.
Conclusions
The above competencies are framework for which we will run our classroom but, they
help also us determine if we are doing right by the TExES Pedagogy and Professional
Responsibilities. It is important for all teachers and future teachers to know the competencies in
and out because they are essentially our self-assessment o determine if we are running our
classroom correctly. By ensuring I understand and implement these competencies into my

classroom I am doing my future students justice by reaching as many learners as effective as

possible.
