Opening Hook/Warm Up:
**if I have a bowl of water and a bowl of dry cereal can
you tell me about them, what do you see? Feel?
**weve talked about the 3 types of matter; solid, liquid,
and gas. But now we are going to discuss the ways to
classify that matter.

Date(s):
October 10, 2015
Grade Level:
Second
TEK: S2.5A
Classify matter by physical properties, including shape,
relative mass, relative temp, texture, flexibility, and
whether the material is a solid or liquid.
Objective: Student Friendly:
I/We will classify matter by physical properties, including
shape and texture

Big Understanding:
It is important for us to understand that everything is made up of matter.
Summative Assessment Evidence:
Students will examine 3 objects and write a paragraph for each object explain the physical properties of the object
Formative assessment (CFU):
**Teacher observes the class as they work together with their objects
**Using questions to the students to determine the amount of understanding
Higher Level Questions to Incorporate: Higher Level Questions to Incorporate:
** can you tell me about objects that have the same shape? Texture?
** how is being able to classify the objects important?
** can the classification of an object change? Example: ice to water
Instructional Strategies / Student Activities/ Grouping Patterns:
Teacher Input/Modeling: IDO:
Introduction/ Hook: lets talk about what were going to learn today
Objective: 2.5A read as a class
Big understanding: read big understanding
Vocabulary: discuss as a class
** classify- arrange (a group of people or things) in classes or categories according to shared qualities or
characteristics:
** physical-relating to the body
** texture-the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance
Teacher takes out the bowl of water and the bowl of dry cereal and discuss as a group the texture and shape of these
objects. As teacher walks around with them.
As a class do we all agree that the water is a liquid but what about the cereal, what shape is it? Is it soft or hard?
now what would happen if I put the cereal in with the water?
Teacher shows a short video on the smart board the talks about the classification of matter ( technology
Guided Practice: WE DO:
Now its your turn
In your groups we are going to classify objects that are in this bag ( holds bag up) by shape and texture.
Use the handout I give you to write down the words your group uses to classify your objects
CFU (Checking for understanding):
The teacher has the groups read off how they classified the objects
Teacher uses the overhead to write down how the student classified the objects filling in the handout that the
students did ( technology)
Throughout the lesson the teacher will be asking questions for understanding. During the group activity the teacher
will ask questions of groups as she is listening to the other groups

Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students):

Tonight I challenge you to find 3 objects in your backyard that have different textures and shapes, write them down
and tomorrow we will discuss what everyone found.
Ending, Summary / Reflection:
Who can tell me what we learned about today? (objective)
