Purpose
TointroducestudentstoOnlineLearning,establishexpectationsandeducatestudentson

Format
InstructionwillbedeliveredinanAugmentedRealityGame(ARG)structureutilizing
transmediaandpromotinggroupcollaboration,criticalthinking,problemsolving.Studentswill
beregisteredinthelearningmanagementsystemcanvas.Conceptsofinstructionwillinclude
synchronouscommunication,asynchronouscommunication,learningmanagementsystems,

forums,blogs,groupprojects,individualprojects,selfdiscipline,andselfmotivation.

Problem
Studentstodayarenotgivenanintroductiontoonlinelearningpriortobeingenrolledina
completelyonlinecourse.Noonlinelearningexpectationsareestablishedandthereisno
restrictionagainststudentsenrollingthemselvesin100%onlinelearningcourses.Thisleads
manystudentstoelevatedlevelsoffrustrationanddifficultyhandlingtimeelementsassociated
withonlinelearning.

ThelearningphilosophybehindthisinstructionwillbeaConstructivistPhilosophywithafocus
onSocialConstructivism,ProblemBasedLearning,InquiryBasedLearningandothers.

Day1F2Fmeetingfirstclassdayofsemester
Asthesemesterbegan,theinstructorwasstartingthedeliveryofinstructionforthefirst
dayofclass.Unexpectedly,amysteriouswomanbargesinthedoorinapanic.Shortofbreath,

shetellstheinstructorandthestudentsthathernameisOnliNeleArningandsheiswiththe
schoolscybersecuritydivision.Ms.Arninggoesontotellthatahorribleeventhasoccurred.
Theschoolhaslostallofitsdatafromthedatabase.Thedatabaseservedasanimportantstorage
locationforalldocumentationrelatedtoonlinecourses.Thedatabasewasthebackboneofthe
onlinelearningplatformasitheldimportantdetailsnecessaryforrunningcoursesoverthe
internet.Throughsomespeculationintothematter,itseemedthatahackerhadgained
unauthorizedaccesstotheonlinelearningdatabaseandstoleordamagedallthedatathatwas
beingheldbythesystem.Afterhavingundergoneamajordataloss,thereisnowtheneedfora
largecollectiveefforttogathertheinformationagainsothatthedatabasecanberecreatedfor
currentandfuturestudentsalike.Themajorrecreationofthedatabasewasrequiredand
requiredsoon.
Ms.Arningrealizedthedatalossfromthedatabasecameasagreatdisappointmentfor
thestaffandthestudents.Theincidentnotonlymeantadelayintheavailabilityofonline
learningmaterials,butlackofanydetailsfortheircurrentcourse.Italsomeantthatthedatahad
tobecollectedandcompiledonceagain.Theentireprocesscouldbelongandtedious.Alarger
numberofindividualsworkingtorecoverthelostdatacouldgreatlyspeeduptherecovery
process.Ms.Arningrequeststheassistancefromtheentireclasstohelpingatheringand
compilingallofthenecessarydatatorebuildthedatabase.Toaidintheinformationcollection
process,thestudentswereprovidedwithabusinesscard.
AllthebusinesscardhadwasaQRcodeononesideandaURL
ontheother.At
thatpoint,Ms.

Arningthankedtheentireclassfortheirassistanceinthistryingtimeandmentionedhowshe
lookedforwardtoworkingwitheveryone.
Duetothelackofinformationandthecurrenteventsathand,theinstructordecidedit
wasbesttoletthestudentsgo,sotheycouldgetstartedonthetaskathand.Beforeleavingthe
instructorhadtheclassselforganizeinto5groupsof3to5studentseach.Whilethiswasnota
competition,smallergroupswouldallowforclosercommunicationandcooperation.All
informationgainedbyanyindividualorgroupwastobesharedontheclassforumsinCanvas.
Oncethegroupshaveselforganized,theinstructorreleasedthemtoworkatthelocalcomputer
labormoveonwiththetaskinanymannertheirgroupchose.
