At the end of this session, learners
will:
1.Know the factors that influence
the design process.

learned

Design process is a methodical series of

steps that engineers use in creating
functional products and processes.
In todays world buildings are becoming more
complex so an understanding of construction
details along with an ability to communicate
your ideas effectively is essential if a project is
satisfactorily
designed,
planned
and
translated into reality.

Factors influencing the DESIGN

PROCESS

Financial (Cost);
Client needs;
Building regulations;
Health, safety and
welfare;
Construction Design and
Management Regulation
and Planning acts.

Financial (Cost)
In most cases, there is a limit to the funds
available for construction. Once defined, this
limit has a major influence on subsequent
design decisions, from building size and
configuration to material selection and
detailing.

Client needs
Some clients have a clear
idea of a program, budget,
and other project objectives,
including
the
final
appearance of the building.
Others
look
to
their
architect to help them
define
the
project
objectives and to design a
building that meets those
objectives.
In
both
cases
the
effectiveness
of
the
relationship
between
client and architect is a
major factor in making

COMMUNITY CONCERNS/SOCIAL NEEDS

Clients and their architects must adjust their
designs to satisfy community groups, neighbors,
and public officials.
These design adjustments are often ad hoc efforts
to meet objections or to gain support rather than
direct responses to codified requirements.

Building Regulations
Regulatory constraints on design have increased
steadily.
Beginning with simple safety requirements and
minimal land-use and light-and-air zoning,
building codes and regulations have grown into a
major force in design that regulates every aspect
of design and construction.

Health Safety and Welfare

Aim to ensure that a workplaces meet the health,
safety and welfare needs of all members of a
workforce.
Health and Ventilation.
workplaces
need
to
be
adequately
ventilated.
Fresh, clean air should be drawn from a
source outside the workplace.

Safety & Maintenance.

The workplace and certain equipment, devices and
systems should be maintained in efficient working order.
Welfare/Sanitary.
Suitable & sufficient sanitary conveniences and washing
facilities should be provided at readily accessible places.
An adequate supply of high-quality drinking water.

CONSTRUCTION DESIGN &

MANAGEMENT REGULATIONS
They set out what people involved in construction
work need to do to protect themselves from harm and
anyone the work affects.
Aimed at improving the overall management and
coordination of health safety and welfare throughout
construction projects.

Whatever your role in construction, CDM aims to improve

health and safety in the industry by helping you to:

1. Sensibly PLAN
risks involved are
to finish

THE WORK so the

managed from start

2. have the right people for the right

job at the right time

3. cooperate and coordinate your

work with others

4. have the right information about

the risks and how they are being
managed
5. consult and engage with workers
about the risks and how they are
being managed
6. communicate this information
effectively to those who need to know

WORKSHOP
SCENARIO:
You work for a small construction
firm that has been involved to
handle and manage house building
project.
Your
company
shall
construct a house building by
which as an assistant to the
designer, you are asked by your
supervisor to perform the following
tasks.
Note: please refer to the drawing
1. Identify your top 3 factors
influencing Design Process.
2. Justify why you have selected
these 3 factors.
3. Present your recommendations.

Stages of Design
Process

Most building are complex structures.

They represent things such as landmarks,
a type of statement by architects and
designers
Buildings allow us to function many ways
such as schools, hospitals, airports,
railway stations etc.
Even a simple building or house has
many components and is designed to
meet everyday activities
Buildings are expensive to construct and
needs considerable amount for
maintenance

Need for and Benefits of a structured

framework for Design
A lot of work goes into deciding whether a building
project can be built. This is known FEASIBILITY.
When a client asks an architect to design a building,
an appraisal of the criteria for success is completed to
determine whether the building can go ahead.
PRE CONSTRUCTION PHASE. When the feasibility is
complete, much more work goes into designing the
building before construction work takes place.

Key Term
Feasibility . Deciding whether the
building is either practicable or will
proceed.
