Prayers for the Blessing of a Grave

Make the sign of the Cross
Read one of the passages of Sacred Scripture from the back pages
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil. Amen
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners now
And at the hour of our death. Amen.
Prayer of Blessing of the Grave
Father, as we stand here, at the grave of our loved one, we place before you
all those we have loved who have died and now dwell in eternity.
We commend them to you through your Son Jesus Christ,
who died for us so that we might live together with Him in Heaven.
O God, by whose mercy those who have died can find rest,
bless this grave, and send your holy angel to watch over it.
Father, forgive those who have died any sins they may have committed in life
and bring them healing of mind, heart and body in the joy of your kingdom.
There in the company of your angels and saints
may we all find our home for all eternity.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Here sprinkle the grave with Holy Water

Prayers for those who have died

Prayers of Commendation
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen
May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen

May the choirs of angels come to greet you,

May they speed you to Paradise.
May the Lord enfold you in His mercy
May you find eternal life.
Prayer for those who are grieving
Merciful Lord, you know the anguish of the sorrowful,
You wept for your friend Lazarus.
You are close to those who mourn.
Be with us in our grief
And strengthen our faith in your everlasting love. Amen

Readings from Sacred Scripture

Psalm 130
Out of the depths I cry to you O Lord, Lord hear my voice!
O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading.
If you O Lord, should mark our guilt, who would survive?
But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you.
My soul is waiting for the Lord, I count on His word.
My soul is longing for the Lord; more than watchman for daybreak.
Look to the Lord, so merciful in love, so full of redemption.
Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity.

Colossians 3:3-4
You have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God.
But when Christ is revealed and he is your life
you too will be revealed in all your glory with him.

John 14:1-6
Jesus said to his disciples:
Do not let your hearts be troubled.
Trust in God still, and trust in me.
There are many rooms in my Fathers house;
if there were not, I should have told you.
I am going now to prepare a place for you
and after I have gone and prepared you a place,
I shall return to take you with me;
so that where I am you may be too.
You know the way to the place where I am going.
Thomas said, Lord, we do not know where you are
going, so how can we know the way?
Jesus said:
I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.
No one can come to the Father except through me.
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures
where He gives me repose.
Near restful waters He leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit.
He guides me along the right path;
He is true to His name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness
no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff;
with these you give me comfort.
You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing.
Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lords own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever.
