Professional Semester III is a fivecourse equivalent integrated semester including halftime teaching and
professional study in curriculum design, leadership, advanced methods, andreflectivepractice. InternTeachersare
assigned full time toschoolsforthesemesterduringwhichtheyassumeresponsibilityfor approximately onehalfof
the teaching day. PSIIIprofessionalstudyisdesignedtocomplementandenhance theinternship. Theprofessional
study components may occur on or offcampus and are coordinated bythe Faculty Mentors in collaboration with
InternTeachersandschoolpersonnel.

MyPSIIIinternshipatG.S.LakieMiddleschoolwasanincrediblyrewardingexperience.I
lovedmytimeatthishighenergyandfastpacedschool.Theschoolenvironmentlendsitselfto
beingincrediblyengagingforbothstudentsandstaffalike.Itookadvantageofthisbybecoming
involvedinsomeofthemanyextracurricularactivitiesthatareofferedatLakie.Thestaffat
LakiewasincrediblywelcomingandIwasquicklytreatedlikearegularteacherandwasheldto
thesamestandards.

Iwasfortunatetogettoteachtwogradesixsocialstudiesclasses.Bothclassesof33students
wereincrediblydiverseandinterestingtoworkwith.Ifoundmyselfeagertolearnaboutallof
thestudentsvariouslearningstylesandinterests.ThroughvarioussurveysandtestsIwasable
toassesslearningstylesandinterestsandusethesehelporganizemyunitsandlessons.
ThroughoutmyinternshipthestudentsandIworkedthroughtheCanadianCharterofRightsand
Freedomsunit,alongwithaveryfunandengagingAmazingRaceAncientAthensunit.My
favoriteunit,andarguablymystudentsfavoriteunit,wastheancientAthensunit.Students
workedingroupstocompletechallengesastheymadetheirwayaroundancientAthens.Ifound

thatthestudentswereincrediblemotivatedtolearnthenewmaterialandworktogetherto
completechallenges.It

wasamazingtoseestudentswhowouldtypicallycheckoutduringclasstimetobecome
incrediblyengaged.

Differentiationwasakeypartofeverylessoninthisclassroom.Thereweremanystudentswho
neededvarioussupportsduringlessons.Examplesofthismayhavebeenprovidingthemwith
differentiatedactivities,providingdifferentiatednotesorcontent,evenmodifyinggroupingso
thatallindividualscouldbesuccessful.Mylargestchallengewascreatingparallelprogramming
forastudentthatmirroredthegradecurriculumbutwasatanappropriatelevelforthestudent.
MyPDprojectwascenteredaroundthecreationofthisparallelprogramming.Variousmatching
activitieswereusedforthisstudent,alongwithWHquestionsandsentencestrips.Wealso
incorporatedvariousbooksandvideosintotheprogram.Anotherlargeaspectoftheparallel
programmingwastheuseofanassistiveprogramcalledProloquo2Go.Weworkedtosetupthis
programtobestsuittheneedsofthestudentandtoscaffoldherlearningoftheparalleled
curriculum.ThroughoutthedevelopmentofthisparallelprogramIcollaboratedwithother
teachers,educationalassistants,occupationaltherapist,andspeechlanguagepathologist.Ifound
thistobeanincrediblyrewardingexperienceinwhichIgainedinvaluableknowledgeand
experience.

Ialsohadthepleasureofteachingagradesixphysicaleducationclass.DuringmyinternshipI
taughtmanyunitsincludingbadminton,tchoukball,cooperativegames,loworganizational
games,trackandfield,fitness,andhealth.Duetothelargeschoolpopulationweneededtobe
flexiblewiththespacethatwewouldbeteachinginareascouldincludethegym,foyer,fitness
center,classroom,oroutside.Attimesitwouldbenecessarytoteamteachclasseswhichwould
greatlyincreasethenumberofstudentwewereresponsiblefor.Attimestheremaybeasmany
as4classesof30studentsalltogetherbutmoreoftentherewere2classespairedup.Ifound
teamteachingtobearewardingexperienceandIwasabletolearnanabundanceofteachingand
classroommanagementstrategiesthroughoutthisexperience.

Iwasluckytobeabletobeinvolvedwithsomeofthemanyextracurricularactivitiesthattake
placeatLakie.RightawayIhadtheopportunitytobecomeinvolvedwiththesupervisionof
Gclubbasketball.Ithenhadtheopportunitytobecomeinvolvedintheamazingdanceshowby
volunteeringasanusher.MybiggestcontributiontoLakiesextracurricularactivitieswas
assistinginrunningandsupervisingtheGclubbadmintononWednesdayandFridayafternoons.
Itwasgreattoseehowmanystudentswereexcitedtocomeoutandpracticetheirbadminton

skills.OtheractivitiesthatIwasabletobeinvolvedwithweretheWillyWonkaJr.drama
production,theweeklyFishFridayactivities,andhelpingorganizeanactivityforthegrade6
readingOlympicssleepover.

DuringthisinternshipIalsogainedlotsofexperiencecommunicatingwithparentsandworking
withvarioussupportstaffattheschool,includingeducationalassistantsandcouncilors.
Communicationwithparentwasoftenonadailybasis.Ifoundthatbykeepingthelinesof
communicationopeneveryonewasonthesamepageandtheclassroomfunctionedvery
smoothly.

OverallIfeltthatthestaffandstudentsatG.S.Lakiewelcomedmewithopenarmsintotheir
school.IhavethoroughlyenjoyedmytimehereandfeelthatIhavegrownsomuchasateacher.
IbelievethatLakieencouragesteacherstobewellroundedastheyprovideopportunitiesfor
involvementinbothacademicandextracurricularactivities,andthishasdefinitelyhelpedmake
meawellroundedandconfidentteacher.CompletingmyinternshipatG.S.Lakieisincredibly
bittersweetasIamverysadtobeleavingaschoolthatIhavebecomeincrediblyattachedtobutI
amlookingforwardtoalloftheexcitingopportunitiesasIventureoutandbeginmyteaching
career.

KatelynnhadasolidroundduringherPSIIIInternshipatG.S.LakieMiddleSchool.Shecame
tovisitourschoolinadvanceoftheschoolyear,makingcontactwithhermentorteacherpriorto
Januaryinordertobefullyprepared.

KatelynndemonstratedateachinglevelthatmetalloftheexpectationsofPSIII.Fromscheduled
andunscheduledobservations(formalandinformal),Shehasasuitableclassroompresence,and
ispracticingandimplementingclassroommanagementplansandstudentroutines.Katelynnhas
fosteredawarmandinclusivelearningenvironmentforherstudents,andaclimateconduciveto
learning.Katelynnscurricularknowledgewasapparent,aswasherknowledgeandapplication
ofsoundteachingpedagogy.

OnemajorstrengthKatelynnhasisherabilitytoaccommodateforstudentswith
exceptionalities.Hermostsignificantassetasateacherisherabilitytoworkwithstudentswith
differentlearningneeds.Sheworksfromastrengthbasedapproach,andisabletoaccentuate
andfocusuponastudentscapabilities.Herprofessionallearningprojectwasextensiveand
thorough,andfocusedonmeetingtheneedsofastudentwhohadthemostsignificantand
diverseneeds.Thisprojectwasextremelywelldone,andisacomprehensivetoolthatwillserve
thisstudent,family,andassignedteachersforthecomingyears.

KatelynnsnaturallyapproachabledispositionmadeheranacceptablefitforG.S.LakieMiddle
School.Herleveloforganizationandflexiblenatureareothertraitsthatleadtoherexperiencing
successduringherinternship.Sheisaskilledcommunicator,andthiswasevidentthroughthe
ongoingcommunicationshehadwiththefamiliesofthestudentsshewasassignedto.

Katelynnvolunteeredforanumberofactivitiessuchascoachingbasketballandbadmintonin
ourclubprograms,aswellassupervisingotherschoolbasedevents.Sheisanadequatelyactive
professional,whohasdemonstratedherwillingnesstoworkaspartofourextracurricularteam.

Katelynnpossessestheattributestobeasuccessfulandprofessionalteacher.Irecommend
Katelynnforanyteachingpositionswithinhercurricularskillset,andshehasagreatpotentialin
theareaofInclusiveEducation.IthasbeenapleasurehavingKatelynnatLakie,andwewishher
thebestoftheluckinherteachingcareer.

Forthepastfourmonths,KatelynnJust,wasassignedagradesixpositionatG.S.LakieMiddle
School.ShewasassignedtoteachtwoSocial6classes,aswellasPhysicalEducation6.Shehas
shownhermaturityandprofessionalisminthispositionandhasalwaysbeenwellpreparedto
teachthematerial.

Asasocialstudiesmajor,Katelynnwasverycomfortablewiththematerialfortheclasses.She
putthoughtintothescopeandsequenceofherlessonsandfoundinterestingwaystokeepthe
studentsengaged.Sheusedavarietyofmethodssuchaspresentationswithavarietyofmedia,
interestingcurrenteventtopicsalongwithdiscussions,andusingdifferentiationandmovement.
Studentsweregivenclearexpectationsofwhatworkwastobecompletedanditdidnottake
longforhertotransitionintobeingseenastheteacheroftheclassroom.InPEclassshetaughta
varietyofactivities,includingbadminton,fitnessandhealthandtrackandfield.Shegenerated
manyofthelessonideastouseintheseclasses,aswellascontributingtotheteamofteachers
thatusethegymspaceatthesametime.

Katelynnwasintegraltodevelopingaprogramforoneofourstudentswithspecialneedsinour
classroom.ShecreatednewteachingresourcestobeusedwiththisstudentandIfoundmyself
seekingheradviceonhowtobestapproachmyownteachingpracticesintheclassroom.Inthis
regard,Itrulyfeltacollegialrelationshipaswewouldoftenbounceideasoffofoneanother.
Shehelpedidentifyassistivetechnologythatwillbeintegraltothisstudentsprogrammingover
thenextfewyearsandpotentiallybeyond.

G.S.LakieisaverybusyplacetoworkandKatelynntookadvantagebygettinginvolvedwitha
numberofactivities.Shevolunteeredtohelpcoachtheclubbadmintonandbasketball
programs,volunteeredatthebasketballtournamentandsupervisedfortheschooldrama
production.Shewasalwaysveryflexiblewithherteachingtimetableandwasadaptableto
whateverwasthrownherway.

Asmentionedbefore,Katelynnreallyfeltlikeamemberofourteam.Workingwithnotonly
myself,buttwootherteachersthathavethesamestudents,itwascriticalthatwehadconsistency

andsimilarexpectationsandcommunicationwithparents.Katelynnworkedcollaborativelywith
ourstaffandbroughtsomegreatclassroommanagementandorganizationalideaswithher.

Katelynniswellpreparedtoentertheteachingprofession.Herexperienceandknowledgeof
workingwithstudentswithdisabilitiesisastrongasset.Shehadagreatrapportwiththe
studentsandIknowshewillbemissed.Iwishherluckinherendeavortopursueacareerin
teaching.

facultymentor,Ihadtheopportunitytoobserveandinteractwithheronanumberofoccasions.

Katelynnsworkethicisadmirableasevidencedbyherplanningandherwillingnesstocomplete
therequirementsoftheinternshipherprofessionalgrowthplan,portfolioandprofessional
developmentprojectweresubmittedinaproficientandtimelyfashion.Katelynnconducts
herselfinaveryprofessionalmannerbothinappearanceandwhencommunicating.

Herveryambitiousprofessionalinquiryprojectreflectscurrentteachingpracticesbydeveloping
mindfulactivitiesforastudentwithdiverselearningneeds.Thisprojectwillremainattheschool
andbeofgreatassistancetothisstudentandperhapsothersaswell.

Dailylessonplansrevealacommitmenttostudentsandtheteachingprofessionasindicatedbya
varietyofappropriateteachingstrategies,theuseofdifferentiatedinstructionandevident
assessment.Itisapparentthatshespentcountlesshoursfindingresources,integratingtechnology
andfindinguniqueandsuccessfulwaystodifferentiateherlessons.Inhergrade6PEandSocial
Studiesclasses,Iobservedengagingactivitiesstructuredtoincludeallstudents.Shegaveclear
instructions,checkedregularlyforunderstanding,gaveindividualattentionasrequiredand
encouragedherstudentsthroughoutthelessonsbothinthegymandclassroom.

Shereadilymetthechallengeofteachingclassesofmorethan30students.Sheemployed
strategiesthatfosteredaproactive,ratherthanreactivephilosophy.Consistentandpositive
implementationofclassroomrulesandroutineswereevidenceofherunderstandingofclassroom
managementprinciples.Shepurposefullycreatedpositiverelationshipsanditwasobviousthe
studentslikedandrespectedher.InPE,sheinstructedtwocombinedgrade6classesinagym

thatwasdividedandcontainedanotherlargeclass.Beingabletosuccessfullymanageunder
thosecircumstanceswasaclearindicatorofherabilities.

Katelynnalsofoundtimetocollaborativelyworkwithfellowinternsandassistwithmanyschool
activities.Sheappearedquitecomfortableinabusyschoolenvironmentexhibitingtheimportant
attributesofbeingflexibleandsupportiveofothers.

Overall,Katelynnhasachievedalevelofteachingcompetencethatclearlyexceedsexpectations
onewouldhaveofateacheratthispointinhercareer.Uponentryintotheprofession,Katelynn
willquicklybecomeavaluedmemberofanyschoolstaffshejoins.Iwishherwellinherfuture
career.
