GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
I will be taking courses at Studio Art Center International in Florence over the summer to learn more
about art conservation, art history, and the law surrounding the field. The conservation class focuses on painting
restoration techniques, like inpainting; conservation techniques; conservation techniques; ethical guidelines; and
discussions and visits to past conservation projects that have occurred in Florence. I will also take a course on
Renaissance art history that focuses on the development of the Renaissance in Florence and its influence. I will
go for the late spring semester from May 19th to June 25th.
Art conservation is a way for me to combine my passions for chemistry and art history and these courses
are a way to focus on that and reflect on whether art conservation is something I really would like to pursue as a
career. This course offers a very unique experience for me to try actually working in the field as an
undergraduate. Usually, any work at all would require a graduate degree and a few years of apprenticeship, so
this course will allow me to see if this would be something I am truly interested in pursuing.
To differentiate my experience from what is required for the courses, I will work in my reflection
throughout the classes to make connections between work within class to works I encounter outside of class. I
will also work to research different conservation techniques than those I learn about in class to expand my
learning.

students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.

Demonstrate the ability to locate, interpret, and critically evaluate primary sources
appropriate to field.
o I will be exposed to many works of art first hand and interpret and evaluate them
as a part of and outside of class
o While in Florence, Ill be able to apply what I learn in class to primary works I
encounter outside of class, which will help enrich my learning. I will make an effort
to make these connections every day.
Creativity:
Understand and optimize the use of people, technology, physical resources or community
in a creative process.
o I will learn more about the art conservation community that is especially active in
Florence by meeting conservators currently working on projects and meeting other
students interested in art conservation.
o I will encounter new technologies and techniques while working on the
conservation project that will help me better understand art and the science
involved in conserving it. I may also be able to research technologies that will lead
to better conservation techniques while Im working.
Articulate the broader significance of a creative project and the value of its contributions.

o
In both the art history course and the conservation course I will examine and
consider creative projects (works of art) and the value of its contributions to
society and art history.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
I will keep a journal during the classes and consider the following questions every week:
What would you change if you could live this week over again? What would you keep the same?
What challenges did you encounter? How did you overcome them? And what can you learn from facing these
problems?
What works did you encounter outside of class that fit with discussions in class?
Have you learned a new take on art and art history? (Broader significance of art)
How has the art community influenced your experience?
What have you learned this week? So what? Now What?
