Complete the work on a separate piece of graph paper

Graph each equation. Be sure to have the exact vertex and at least two correct points on either side of the
line of symmetry. State the vertex, line of symmetry, if it is concave up or down, and describe the
transformation from the parent graph.

Ex. = ( ) +

The vertex is at (h,k) which is (2,2).
The line of symmetry is at x=h which is x=2.
The parabola is concave down since it has been reflected across the x-axis.
The graph has a horizontal shift to right 2 units, vertical shift up 2 units, a vertical stretch of a factor 2 and
has been reflected across the x-axis.

Determine whether or not each expression below is a perfect square. Explain why the expression is or is
not a perfect square. If it is not a perfect square, find the perfect square that seems closest to the given
expression and show how the perfect square can be adjusted to given expression.

Ex. + + The expression is not a perfect square because 1, therefore b and c cannot have a
!
relationship of = (!)! .
2 ! + 8 + 14 = 2( ! + 4 + 7)
Pull out the GCF=2 ,
The expression ! + 4 + 7 is still not a perfect square
! + 4 +
How can I make this expression a perfect square?

!
! + 4 + 4

use = (!)! to make the perfect trinomial

! + 4 + 4 ! + 4 + 7
The equations do not equal each other. How can they be?
!
!
+ 4 + 4 + 3 = + 4 + 7
Now the equations equal each other

( + 2)! +3= ! + 4 + 7
Rewrite the perfect trinomial as a perfect square
2(( + 2)! +3)
Substitute back into the original equation
!
2( + 2) +6
Simplify

Given the diagram below, write two equivalent equations for the area

Note: If you write the area model in standard form first, you can follow the procedures for writing the
expression in vertex form

Write the expression in factored form. Graph the equation and show all your work for finding the
following:
Axis of symmetry
Vertex
x-intercepts
y-intercepts
vertical stretch

ex. + + = 2 ! + 7 + 10 = 2( + 2)( + 5)

!!! !!
axis of symmetry: = ! = 3.5

vertex (-3.5, y)=(-3.5,-4.5)

x-intercepts: 0=2 + 2 + 5
0 = + 2 0 = ( + 5) , x=-2 or x=-5

y-intercepts: , x=-2 or x=-5

y-intercepts: 20 =2(0 + 2)(0 + 5)
y=20

vertical stretch: a=2
