REFLECTION FOR GROUP 5S MICRO TEACHING
In 20 minutes in a class of 25 students at basic level, a speaking lesson of greeting at
a bar was performed under the instruction of a teacher and two assistants. They all delivered
an interesting, meaningful lesson with quite good classroom management skills in spite of
some limitations that can be changed to have a really good lesson for students.
In the lesson, three main positive points are clearly performed. First of all, warm-up
activity is very interesting and can lead to the new lesson. The teacher decided to help
students feel comfortable and encouraged to start the lesson by asking them to listen to a
short recording of music. Most of the students are interested in music, so combining it in
class is a good decision of the teacher. This activity was not only used for relaxing but also
logical to help teacher lead their students to the new lesson. Moreover, the teacher did give
students useful language such as necessary vocabulary, formal and informal sentences for
a short greeting. It is another good point because they are very useful materials for students
to help them more confident in their speaking activities later on. In addition, the teacher
showed her confidence in her teaching. For example, she talked fluently and confidently in
front of the class. She also went around to observed students activities.
Besides the strengths, there are some small points that the teacher should pay
attention in her lesson. The first one is that the teacher should not ask two students to go to
the front of the class and practice the talk immediately after the model. This may make
many students confused because their level is just basic. The second issue is that the time
for students to interact with each other is quite short. Furthermore, the instruction of the
teacher is not very clear sometimes because of the loud noise from the music.
From some shortcomings mentioned above, in our own class, we will try to change
them a little to make the lesson more and more useful to the students. Firstly, we will let
students to practice more with their partner before asking them to present in front of the
class. At that time, students will be more comfortable to perform well their talk. Then, we
will add one activity to give students more chances to practice greeting and short talk in
the context of a bar by asking them try to find new partners as much as they can in around5
minutes and greet and ask them some basic information. For the problem with loud noise
affecting understanding of teachers instruction, we will low down the volume when giving
instruction.
All in all, group 5 offered a good micro-teaching of speaking lesson. From the lesson,
students can know how to greet and make small talk in a noisy place like a bar. Although
there are some limitations in teaching, they are not so serious and can be adjusted in order
to have a better lesson.
