(4 marks) b) Sketch a diagram of a wet cooling tower and explain the process of rejecting waste heat in the system. (4 marks) ©) The Reversed Carnot Cycle is the most efficient refrigeration cycle operating between two specified temperatures. Sketch the T-s diagram of the Reversed Camot Cycle and provide TWO reasons why the cycle is not practical (4 marks) QUESTION 2 A fluid at 25°C is forced over a flat plate 10 meter in length and 1 meter in width at a free stream velocity of 1.3 m/s. The plate surface is held constant at 45°C. a) Calculate the total heat transfer from the surface (W) if the fluid flows in a simplified one-dimensional assumption along the length of the plate, and b) Calculate and then sketch profile plots of the local convection heat transfer coefficient over the plate, Start at x=0.1m and subsequently plot for x=2.5m and x=10m distances. The refrigerant enters the compressor as superheated vapor at 0.1 MPa and -10°C and leaves at 0.7 MPa and 50°C. The refrigerant leaves the condenser at 0.65 MPa and 22°C, then throttled to 0.1 MPa by an expansion valve. For this cycle, a) sketch the complete T-s diagram, b) determine the rate of heat removal from the refrigerated space (W), ©) calculate the power input to the compressor (W), and d) — evaluate the isentropic efficiency of the compressor (%). (12 marks) QUESTION 4 Saturated air at 100 kPa and 20°C flows with a velocity of § mis through an insulated 5 cm diameter air-conditioning pipe. A heater within the pipe supplies 500W of energy to the flowing air before discharge. Assuming no pressure loss throughout the process, comment on the comfort condition of the discharged air and suggest one method to improve it. The specific heat values at constant pressure for dry air and vapor are 1.005 kJ/kg.°C and 1.82 kuikg.°C respectively. (12 marks) QUESTION 5 Consider a 3 meter long thin-walled double-pipe heat exchanger with tube and shell diameters of 1.25cm and 2.75cm, respectively. Water at 20°C is used to condense refrigerant 134a, The refrigerant flows inside the tube with a convection heat transfer coefficient of h, = 4100 Wim*.K while the water flows through the shell at an average velocity of 3.0 mis. Using the effectiveness-NTU method, determine the overall heat transfer coefficient of this heat exchanger. (12 marks) (© Hak Cipta Universiti Teknologi MARA CONFIDENTIAL
