1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
A fantasy is having patients who are compliant and take their medication like advised by their doctor. The
reality is patients do not take their medication and go in to manic depression and are non-compliant.

I put patients in the room they are supposed to go to, make appointments, and talk to the insurance
companies.

Very secure I cannot see myself doing anything else.

My fantasies are to not have issues with problems I cannot do. In reality, I stay busy and do my job.

I am in charge of medical billing and keeping up with charts.

A fantasy of the job is being able to choose your own hours but in reality, I put in many more hours than
expected and I am constantly on call.

After college, I completed medical school and then four years of psychiatric residency.

3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
I come to work and talk to patients about their mental status, give prescriptions, and see patients in the
hospital that need psychiatric care.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?

Very secure, the future in my field is bright with innovative treatments and research being done.

Yes, I have always wanted to be a doctor and was very interested in psychiatry.

Yes, I enjoy interacting with patients and making a difference in their lives.

Summary of Interview with Mentor

Psychiatrists are constantly on call


Must go to medical school and after pick a specialty
4 years of residency is required
He has worked 15 years as a psychiatrist
Experience helps when dealing with different patients because he feels more prepared now than
when he first started
Along with appointments in the clinical setting, he also rounds in the hospital and sees any
psychiatric patients
He does not get stressed often which is very surprising for a doctor and especially a psychiatrist
Average salary is from $150-200,000
There is not any more room for growth in the medical field because a doctor is the highest it gets
He is very secure because it is becoming more accepting to admit to psychiatric conditions and
get treatment
In the past, people were embarrassed but now it is more common
He feels like he is making a difference in patients lives and that is very rewarding
Interacting with patients is a major part of this job
He works with geriatric and adult patients so their problems are different than what a teenager
would experience or even a young adult

Professional Interviews Summary

Working with psychiatric patients involves non-compliant patients and it can be difficult to make
sure they are taking their medicine
There are many no-show patients
Not much schooling is required to be an office worker, high school or some college
They deal with getting the patient ready for Dr. Loya to see them
They also talk to the insurance companies and make sure the patients are getting their
prescriptions
Medical billing is a big part of the job
The average salary is much less than a doctor: $30-48,000
Not much job security, but they feel comfortable because they feel like they are doing a good job
Enjoy working in a clinical setting and helping patients
Do most of the behind the scenes work for the patients while Dr. Loya just briefly talks to the
patients and prescribes medicine
There is room for growth but more education is needed
Must stay organized to run a practice well
One of the people felt stressed often when dealing with patients and always being busy, but the
other only felt stressed occasionally.
Once you have worked in the same place for a while, you feel more comfortable with your coworkers
