(A note on the various grade levels: This course is taught to two 9th grade students, four tenth
grade students, three eleventh grade student, and two 12th grade students)
Objectives/Goals:

1. Students will know grammatical and structural mechanics

2. Students will understand that writing that uses advanced sentence structure and proper
grammar conventions promotes fluency and ease of communication
3. Students will be able to analyze sentence fragments in order to determine how to best
organize them for fluency and understanding
4. Students will be able to organize sentence fragments into sentences and constructed
sentences into a paragraph based on sentence structure mechanics
5. Students will be able to correctly punctuate sentences
Assessments:
Formative:
Students will organize sentence fragments into complete, logical sentences and sentences into a
logical paragraph
Summative:
Students will complete an advanced sentence structure quiz at the end of the second nine weeks
Procedures:
Step One (5-8 mins.)
Hook
Sentence plays occur weekly, and the students understand how and why we use them.
Nevertheless, reiteration is important, so I will ask to see if anyone remembers why we do
sentence plays first. The anticipated answer is so that students can gain a better understanding of
and more practicing utilizing advanced sentence structure. I will begin by briefly summarizing
the plot of Fall of the House of Usher. Using narratives is a strong strategy to hook students in,
and the story itself provides context for Sentence Play #12. I will play close attention to the
relationship between the brother and sister and will emphasize their fear of death (this Sentence
Play is perfect for the 12th week of school, particularly if that 12th week falls around Halloween
or late October/early November in general). Afterward, I will pass out Sentence Play #12a
Step Two (25 mins.)
Gradual Release (I/We/You)
I will begin by asking whether the students want to work independently or with a partner. Either
is fine, as independent work allows me to see, more clearly, how the individual student is
progressing, and working in partners aids in collaboration and group problem solving. Once the
students have decided what they want to do, I will hand out Sentence Play #12a. This Sentence
Play has four parts, and once the students have put all four sentence fragments together, they
must analyze the sentences and determine how Edgar Allen Poe arranged them into a paragraph.
The students will have twenty-five minutes to sort all four Sentence plays, organize them into a
paragraph, and upload the answers theyve come up with, punctuated, into their Google Doc.
While the students work, I will circulate the room and answer any clarifying questions as well as
provide any guidance necessary, especially for struggling students.
Step Three (5-10 mins.)
Check for Comprehension
As a class, we will go over the answers they came up with. Students who answered correctly will
have this time to correct any answers they got wrong. Due to the nature of the tracking available

on Google Docs, I will be able to see who answered correctly and who revised. I will be able to
tailor grammar instruction throughout the week accordingly.
Materials Needed:
Sentence Play cards (#12a, b, c, d) (See appendix B)
Fall of the House of Usher (One copy)
Laptops
Google Docs
Sentence Play Document (On Google Docs, Completed, See Appendix A)
Attention to Individual Student Needs:
Four of my students are further advanced than their peers. When they finish their Sentence Plays
early, they circulate the room and help their peers in a manner similar to the AVID program.
They do not give the answers, but rather ask wide, open-ended, and guiding questions to help
their peers come to the answers on their own. For two of my students who have a history of
struggling with sentence structure for the past few weeks, I will check in with them more
frequently.

Appendix A (Sentence Play Document, Completed)

#12a It was the work of the rushing gust -- but then without those doors there did stand the lofty
and enshrouded figure of the Lady Madeline of Usher.
#12b There was blood upon her white robes and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every
portion of her emaciated frame.
#12c Upon the instant, as if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the
potency of a spell, the huge antique panels to which the speaker pointed threw slowly back their
ponderous and ebony jaws.
#12d For a moment, she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold-- then,
with a low, moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent
and now final death-agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse and a victim to the terrors he had
anticipated.
