Lesson
Objective
To observe Maths teaching in action and begin to understand effective strategies
for Math teaching and learning in groups.

Procedure
You will need a copy of the Observation Table:
Before the Observation

Arrange to observe a lesson that focuses on Maths and discuss the lesson
with the teacher beforehand so you can know the Objectives and the
lesson development.
Ask the teacher what strategies she will use to help her deliver the lesson.

Objective:
Predict the total after multiply the number.

Strategies:
Working in groups.
Say to them look to the first number.
Reward system.

During the Observation

Complete the Table and make notes in the appropriate column on:
How the teacher engages students
How the concept is presented
How much of the lesson is teacher talking time
How much group work is used
What manipulatives were used and their purpose

Title of Math Lesson :Grade: Estimate the number and multiply it.
Objective(s): Make the students able to round the numbers.

understanding.

1. What was the objective of the lesson? To know how they can approximate the total with
multiplying.
2. Was the objective achieved? Yes. I observed the students were most of them solving math
problem. The rest of them were get closer but finally they understand the lesson after
teacher help.
3. How was the concept introduced? By activating their prior knowledge to be ready to the
new lesson.
4. How much teaching was done in L1? All the lesson.
5.
6. Why do you think the teachers used L1? The language of the curriculum changed to Arabic.
7. Did the teacher use manipulatives? What were the purpose of these?
The students used board and markers to write their answers and make them collaborate
together.
8. Were there any other resources/materials used to deliver the lesson? No.
9. What strategies/method did she use to teach the concept? She used an examples from real
life. Strategy for to make the multiplying easier. For example, 7x6=42 how they know? she
said to them to make the 6 reach to 10 how many number you will add? (4).
10. Did teacher do whole-class teaching or group work? The teacher do the explanation with
the students
11. When did she work with the whole class? Why?
most of the class she ask questions which make the students with the lesson.
12. How much of the lesson were the students using the book?
They didn't used their books. The exercises on the book was homework.
13. What strategies did the teacher use to teach the concept?
In board: She revised with them the multiply method to help them to learn the
new methods, because the previous and the new information are linked
together.
Then she did with them the exercise. she used an example of daily life such as "If
had 290 DHR is it close to 300?"
