Factoring with quadratics

This lesson plan contains copyright material under the U.S educational copyright laws and policies. Please do not copy unless

Procedures
1. Using Factoring: - With students learning how to factor they will be able
to get to the answers one step faster. They would also gain the knowledge which will
allow them to explain beyond the basics of factoring into more challenging factors
such as replacing the a with another number than one. Which will allow them to
think about what they have to do in order to get the answer.
2. They would have to check their answers and ask a friend to see if they have
the same answer. If they do not have the same answers then they would have to
explain to one another what they did to find out their mistake. By doing this it will
allow the student to become the teacher when helping the other student to
understand the material.
3. Then the class will come together to discuss the material. The students will
then have to come up to the board and explain the problem assigned to them. To
make sure the class understands how to do the problem and if the students gets it
wrong this would be another opportunity for the students to know how to do it by
asking another to show them their mistake and allowing them to fix it. By doing this
the student would understand how to do the problem for the next time allowing the
student to get the question right on the next test, quiz, homework or class
assignment.

Step 1: Know your Learners

My students are in the 9th grade and the classroom is very diverse with students
from different parts of the world. In the classroom there are both male and female

students, all ages of 13 and 14 year olds. Throughout the semester there may be some socio
economic which may limit the way the classroom is being taught. A student may not be
able to have access to the right materials needed for the class and may result in bad grades
within the 9 weeks period. There are many types of learning styles within the classroom.
There are students who are linguistic, musical, bodily-kinesthetic and visual so I have to
make note there needs to be an even base where she/he could teach their students while
keeping mind of all of their students learning styles. There are students in the classroom
who speak multiple languages which may confuse them when it comes to spelling and the
way she/he writes their words. Special needs students are taught just like all of the other
students but have more time with the teacher so they can better understand the material.
Step 2: Articulate Objectives and Standards
Standards:
1. Students will be able to understand factoring and how to take them from a
quadratic function.
2. Students needs to be able to teach another student or the class how to factor
materials while allowing the student to become the teacher and teach their
classmates.
Objectives:
1. To sorting the x-intercepts out of the factoring process and to understand
when you have a polynomial you have to factor and give the x-intercepts that can
help the student make the graph of the polynomial.
2. To identify and explain how to graph, solve and rearrange quadratic
equations
3. To analyze and show the basics of algebraic problems and factoring
equations .
4. Compare and identify the same form of the equation but in factored form
which will lead them to explaining how to get these properties.
Step 3: Identify Teaching and Learning Strategies
Learning Strategies
1. Students will interact with their classmate to work out problems that allows
both the students to become teachers.
2. Students demonstrate their understanding at the board and explain what
they have worked on their problem. This allows them to teach the other students
and find their mistakes.
Teaching Strategies
1. I will allow students to do interactive activities which will allow them to get
up and work around the room to gain their answers. Also I give students dry erase
boards and markers to allow all the students to write their answers and put the
correct answer in the air.
2. I will teach students by showing them step by step how to solve the problem
then allowing them to do computer activities which will have make the students

compete for the first five spots. This will allow the students to be more attentive to
the problems and this strategy would make the students want to get the questions
correct so they could earn points on an assessment or assignment.
Step 4: Identify and select support Technologies
The materials needed for the lesson plan is note taking paper, pencils, dry
erase boards and computers. Technology is used in the lesson to help students better
understand the material . This would allow students to interact with technology and
this will give the students better grades on the topic.
Step 5: Evaluate and Revise Design
I will evaluate and revise the design by testing it out among the students in
the classroom and if it does not work I would have to change according to the things
that were done right. Such as if the technology is not working then I would have to
adjust my plans to fit the inconvenience of the technology not work for the period of
time.

Lesson Plan
Step 1: Ready the Learner
I will review the learners characteristic by seeing how they work out
problems and their responses when coming across challenging problems within the
classroom. I will also have students explain what they already know and how they
know this material which will give me feedback on where I should start off teaching
the class.

Step 2: Target Specific Objectives

I will target my lesson on solving algebraic and factoring problems. I will also
target solving, graphing and rearranging quadratic equations.
Step 3: Prepare the Lesson
I will prepare the class where students are in groups of a maximum of 3
students because this allows different minds to come together and solve algebraic,
quadratic and factoring equations.
Materials we will need to do this lesson are paper, pencils. As well as
calculators.
Take a pop quiz the day after finishing the lesson.

Factoring.
Action Plan:
1. I will Identify my students learners preparation activities by
allowing the students to interact with the students around the
classroom.
I will identify my students learners preparation activities by allowing
my students work independently on a factoring quadratic assignment and
have them teach themselves how to get to the answer in a matter of given
minutes.
2- To ready the class for factoring I will need to teach them how to
use the distributive property.
-I would also have to teach them how to foil so when they get the answer
they can check it to make sure they have the right one.
- I will also have to teach them how to do shortcuts so it can save them
time in finding the answer for the problem.

3-Some teaching and learning activities for the lesson is...

An online activity which allows the

students to factor out the quadratic equations which will set
the border of the lesson.
do=play&gameid=93
I will hand out worksheets which will
allow students to better understand quadratic equations.
I will hand out a group assessment made
up of 3 people. They will have 30 minutes to get through as
many of the 50 problems. I will multiply the grade by 2 and
will be the group's final grade for the assessment.
I have an activity that will allow the
students to get up from their desk and find their answers
around the classroom. I will do it by giving the students a
worksheet with 10 equations and they will have to solve
them in approximately 30 minutes. There will be note cards
around the room that are lettered a-j with the answers to
the problems they had to work out on the paper. Then for
the next 10 to 15 minutes I will allow the students to get up
and look for the answers around the classroom. They will
have to put the answers with the corresponding number.
4- Some personal prompts for the lesson would be...
How would you solve this equation? What
are the step you will have to take to find your answer? How
would this equation be applied in other equations and in the
real world?Check your answer
What are the x-intercepts in the quadratic
equation? What is it called when you are checking your
answer to a quadratic equation? Explain why we use foil
and factoring in algebra 1?
5- To check for their understanding I will give the students a skills
assessment and they will have 25 minutes to do it. To submit their
answers I will provide them with clickers so I can gather what questions
they got wrong and what they got right. The answers will be multiple

choice with no more than 15 questions. This is to see if they are

understanding and obtaining the material.
After they finish they can work on worksheets that pertain to the
lesson for the day
Another option to is to sign into a computer and type in the link
given to them to practice the lesson for the day
6- The students will have a chance to have guided practice with
each other. I will have the students play a game. There will be a group of
three and there will be a speaking chair. Two of the students will come
up with a problem and ask the person in the speaking chair to explain
how to solve the problem. Then they continue to rotate chairs for about
30 min.
After guided practice they can create a game for other students to
play that pertain to the lesson
Another activity is to teach the class about the lesson
7- I will have youtube videos to grab their attention. The videos
will be songs that pertain to the lesson to help them better understand
the material. It makes the lesson entertaining for the students so they
will not have to listen to lecturing the whole class period.
While they watch the video they take notes or fill in the blanks.
After they right a reflection on what they learned.
8- The students will have a time for independent practice to keep
rehearsing the material. They will have choices to demonstrate they
understand. Some choices will be to make foldables, create a song, use
technology by creating a powerpoint or prezi, etc. Then I will have the
students grade each other on their presentation.
