8th Grade Performance Task


Scenario:
A series of quakes in your region revealed a fault line, which was undiscovered until
recently. The greatest of the quakes measured 6.0 magnitude in the Richter scale. A similar
event also happened in February 2012, when a 6.8 magnitude hit Visayas Region. But
compared to the Visayas event, the earthquakes in your region only produced significant
cracks in few concrete houses and roads, and no lives were lost. PHIVOLCS as well as other
public and private sectors collaborated to successfully locate and map out the extent of the
blind fault. In conjunction, the President of the Philippines urged PHIVOLCS and all disasterrelated organizations to conduct massive safety and disaster-preparedness campaigns and
seminars in the whole region.
As geologists-consultants of a private organization, your team responded to the call of
the President. Taking into consideration the President's rehabilitation plans for the region on
the construction of resettlement houses for those that are not sturdy enough to withstand a
relatively strong earthquake, and since some owners of the damage house plan to build new
houses, you decided to hold an information dissemination seminar to the public as well as
government contractors on the safe building locations and areas to avoid the hazards of the
fault line. In addition, the seminar will also include earthquake preparedness (emergency
plans and kit), giving special focus to home and school settings.
The following should be taken into consideration in planning and conducting the
