Lesson

Preparation

a Lesson Aim:
Students will continue learning about solving two step equations. Students
will practice solving single step equations algebraically as a warm up. They
will review what we practiced in the previous class period about two step
equations, and will then practice modeling two step equations with algebra
tiles, identifying models of two step equations, and finally work towards
solving them algebraically. We will review why we have to keep the
coefficient when solving two step equations.
b Student Learning Objective:
In preparation for SOL 7.14 the student will a) solve one- and two-step linear
equations in one variable; and b) solve practical problems requiring the
solution of one- and two-step linear equations.
c Introduction:
Students will review how to solve single step equations algebraically.
Students will review what they were introduced to about solving two step
equations, and will draw the model for a couple of two step equations.
d Review:
Students will have to recall what they have learned about variables, and
adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. Students will also
recall what they were introduced to about solving two step equations.
e Lesson Content:
Students will continue to be introduced to solving two step equations.
Students will continue to use algebra tiles to model these equations, and
then practice solving these equations algebraically. Students will review how
to solving single step equations by multiplication, and will then practice
solving two step equations.
f

Questions:

Students should be able to identify an equation. Students should be able to

explain how (and the rules) to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers.
Students should be able to explain why we have to do the same operations
to both sides of an equation. Students should be able to explain when we

add to both sides of an equation, as well as when we are to subtract.

Students should be able to explain how to check their answers for single and
two step equations.
II

Teach the Lesson

a Activities:
Students will do a warm-up in which they will practice solving single step
equations algebraically, as well as drawing models for two step equations.
Students will then continue to practice modeling two step equations and
going through the steps to solve two step equations. From there students will
practice identifying models of two step equations, and will also practice
solving such equations algebraically.
b Materials:
Students will need algebra tiles (which will be provided), equation mats, as
well as the handouts I will provide.
c Check of Understanding:
Students understanding will be determined by how well they do on their
practice and review activities, as well as how well they are able to model two
step equations using algebra tiles. We may do another white board review so
I can see what mistakes students are making (if any), and then re-teach from
there.

III

Lesson Closure

a Conclusion of Lesson:
We will go over how to solve equations with all four operations, and answer
any questions that students have. We will go over how to solve equations
with two steps.
b Reinforcement:
Students will practice modeling and solving single step equations with all
operations, as well as solving two step equations.

IV

Self-Evaluation of Lesson

Students did well with solving operations using their algebra tiles to model
solutions. Something I noticed was they even as we took the algebra tiles
away and began to solve the problems algebraically, students would still

draw the tiles on next to their work. Students still had some difficulty
remembering not to drop the coefficients when solving two-step equations,
but did much better today when drawing arrows to drop down the variable.
