Morning

One Student

On this day I worked with BJ to give the

interest survey. I was supposed to work
with two additional students, but
neither will be available on Tuesdays.
BJ answered questions about what kind
of books he liked to read and activities
he enjoy. We completed one test and
go to know each other. I look forward
to working with BJ and meeting my
other students.
Today I started by greeting both
students with warm smiles. They were
not ready to do any work, so I
decided to read a book aloud. We read
Click Clack Moo by Doreen Cronin. I
had the students choral read at the
parts where it said, click clack, moo.
They really enjoyed the book. Once
they ate their breakfast, I administered
one of them assessments given to us
by Dr. Bluiett, the Yopp-Singer
Phoneme Segmentation Test. I was
only able to make it half way through
before running out of time. I spoke with
my triad members, and we will be
working on this activity for the rest of
the week. I do believe that my
students will need more help in order
to fully understand phonemic
awareness.
Only one of my two students were

present today. I did an interactive read

aloud using Arthurs Halloween. First
we started with a picture walk. I knew
that this group of students has been
working on emotion in text during their
Title 1 instruction, so I decided to talk
about which emotions the characters
were feeling. When we completed the
picture walk, we read through the
book. Each time the characters in the
book laughed, screamed, cried, or
showed any other emotion, I would
have students make the face that
matched the character. Students
clapped when they heard the word
Halloween, stomped when they heard
the word scared, and snapped when
they hear the word witch. Overall, the
students enjoyed this activity. I will
look further into student understand of
emotions next week.
Today I worked with two students. One
student did not make it into the
classroom until 7:50. I only had 5
minutes to work with him, but I did the
best that I could. I wanted to look
further at what students knew about
depicting emotions displayed in a text.
We read the book Today I Feel Silly.
The last page of the book ask, how
are you feeling today? I had students
write one sentence about how they felt
today, or recently, and draw a picture
depicting that emotion. The student
enjoyed this activity. They have a good
understanding of emotions and how to
display/depict them. I did however
notice that their handwriting skills
could use some work. I will meet with
my triad over the next week in order to
decide what path to take with these
students.
On this day I worked with two
students. Like most days, one of the
students walked in at 7:50. Because I
had noticed some issues with spelling
and overall phonemic awareness, I

decided to work on breaking apart

words. We started with a lesson on
syllables. I had students practice using
syllables by looking at and writing
haikus. I plan to extend the idea of
breaking apart words to help students
understand that you can sound out
words when trying to spell them. We
will be working on how letters combine
to make certain sounds. For example,
we can look at boat. One of the
students spelled this word bowt. The
oa makes the long o song. I will work
with students so that they can
understand the basic letter
combinations.
Today we shared our story time with a
group of students. My author study
group put on a short readers theater
for the book Curious George Flies a
Kite. After the readers theater we let
students create their very own kites!
The students really enjoyed this
activity! I believe that this story time
let the students leave the semester
with a positive attitude towards
Morning Intervention!
