SERIES RLC Circuit

OBJECTIVE:
To study the behavior of a series R-L-C circuit. & also to find the kva & kvar of the series R-L-C
circuit.

Apparatus required:
3 phase variac , voltmeter, ammeter, inductor, capacitor , rheostat & wattmeter.
THEORY: A series RLC circuit act as a resonance circuit for a given frequency. By varying the
values of inductor, capacitor & rheostat we can tune the frequency of mains i.e. 50hz. At the
resonance circuit act as pure resistive because the reactance of the inductance equals the reactance of
the capacitor. Power in the RLC circuit is calculated by the given formulas.

CIRCUIT DAIGRAM:

PROCEDURE :
1. Connect the circuit as shown in the diagram.
2. Adjust the rheostat for maximum resistance and the auto transformer to the position of zerooutput voltage and switch on the supply.
3. Adjust the voltage across the circuit to about 70 V and note I, V s, VL, Vc, VR and W.
4. Adjust the rheostat for several settings and repeat step 3.
5. Adjust the rheostat to the maximum setting and change the capacitance to 140 F and repeat
step 4.
6. Compare the values of phase angle as obtained from the meter readings and from the phasor
diagrams. (From the phasor diagrams compute cos and as given in the last two columns
of the table). Draw phasor diagrams showing VR, VL, VC, Vs, & I for different sets of
readings.
