Content Area: Promoting a tobacco free lifestyle.
Grade Level: 6

NHES Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease
prevention to enhance health
Performance Indicator: Examine the potential seriousness of injury or illness if engaging in
unhealthy behaviors.
Objectives:

Students will be able to understand the many consequences of tobacco use.


Students will be able to understand the impact of secondhand smoke and promote
awareness.

Activity #1: Brainstorm known consequences of tobacco use

Give Students sheet of paper


Ask them to brainstorm and write down as many consequences of tobacco use that they
know of
Hand students each a printed list of all known consequences of tobacco use
Have students compare and contrast their list with the list given after the brainstorming
session.
Have class discussion about the harmful effects of tobacco use.

Have a class lecture on the effects of secondhand smoke


Have a class discussion about secondhand smoke
Hand out facts sheet about secondhand smoke and large sheet of paper
Have students pick at least one fact on the fact sheet and create a poster about it.
