Writing Log
Throughout the day I realized how much that I actually write and how I change my
writing for different situations. Statistically, around 70% of my communication through writing
was handled via text message. Another 20% was spent writing on paper for the classes that I had
that day. The last 10% consisted of writing emails. All of these forms of writing take on a
different style that fits the particular situation.
Most of the day consisted of texting which is my most informal form of communication.
The purpose of this writing was mostly for entertainment, however, theres was one text that was
necessary to my commitment to Organization of African Students (OAS). One situation that
required persuasive communication is when the girl that Ive been talking to and I had an
argument about something that happened. She would often sleep over to the point that she
practically lived in my suite. When responding to her texts I had to take more time than usual to
cultivate an accurate text to try not to anger her. The texts were more formal and detail
orientated than usual so that they conveyed a more concerning connotation. By the end of the
day she had agreed to move her stuff back into my room.
In Math 2164, Matrices and Linear Algebra, I took notes on linear transformations. I was
raised to take notes in shorthand so there are seemingly meaningless words on a sheet of paper.

My teacher writes out full sentences at an exceedingly fast pace so this really helps to get all of
the information. Everything is usually organized to the point where I can remember what certain
single words mean because of what its surrounded by. Even though I take notes, I learn by
example most of the time, especially in math, so I actually dont write that much in any class.
Its become a habit that has helped and hurt me in class.
My LBST course requires me to write quite a bit to record all the information. While it is
still not a lot a writing to copy, he speaks for almost the entire class period. For example, if there
are four PowerPoint slides with around three short lines of text, that whole section of notes may
take an entire three pages of college rule notebook paper. He stresses some words to indicate to
the class that the material he is talking about is likely to appear on a test. Unlike my math class,
I write in mostly complete sentences or lists to prepare for tests. This is because most of what is
in the notes or what he says is copied verbatim as a question on the test.
Investigative writing is the bulk of my LBST course. Determining the fine line between
theatre and like, and asking the philosophical question, What is Art? My written responses are
more formal to portray a scholarly image to the reader to instill some type of credibility.
My most formal writing of the day was an email I and to sent to a job recruiter at Bank of
America. Coming to college and learning about professionalism altered my view on email
writing. While my emails have always been professional, they were more so known for its great
structure, not the message. My email was the most informative form of writing that I created that
day. Also, while it was the only email I sent that day, it took a heaping 10% because of how
much review went into the checking process.

Writing is a volatile art form that adapts to many situations. It can change the perception
of some people or persuade them into thinking a certain way. The crucial tool that writing is
should not be overlooked because of the strength it carries throughout the world.
