Job Shadowing
Part 1 Introduction:
A. The reason I chose to job shadow, a Physician Assistant is because I want
to go to medical school. Unfortunately I was not able to shadow Dr. Joel Edwards
so I will shadow a PA, Karen Caffey. Being involved in the medical field is a
career that will bring out the best of me, it is something I have developed a
passion for and I know that my work will always make a difference in someones
life.
B. The path to becoming a Medical Doctor is very rigorous. The starting line
begins in High school, by taking Health Science Courses and as many sciences
in general, also mathematics. Then, one goes on to undergraduate school to
major typically in a science but it does not matter what one majors in. Through
four years of undergraduate you are usually enrolled in a pre-med program or
series of classes to meet the medical school requirements. Taking classes such
as Biology, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Calculus. Usually third or fourth year
in undergrad you have to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) that
determines whether you are accepted into medical school. Once you are in
medical school you are there for another four years. In these four years you take
classes such as Cell Biology, Embryology, Genetics, Human Behaviour,
Immunology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience and many more. Depending on the
specialty it may determine if additional years of school is necessary. Then the
training begins with a Residency Program and a Fellowship. Finally, you get
certification or license stating that you are a Medical Doctor. Many think that is
the end, but in reality medicine evolves everyday, therefore; doctor must be up to
date.
C. Medical Doctors use their skills of auscultation, palpation, observation and
diagnostic tests to diagnose a patient. Based on the diagnoses they prescribe
treatments, typically with medications. The responsibility of a Medical Doctor is
simple. Keep the patient alive and stable! I guess its easier said than done. The
doctor has the responsibility to communicate with his staff, diagnose a patient,
treat them and if they are in critical condition they are responsible to maintain the
patient alive.
D. The salary of an MD varies from the specialty and experience. A primary
MD salary could be 195,000 dollars while an Orthopedics salary can be 421,000
dollars.
