E-portfolio Assignment 5: Listening Lesson plan
Context: This lesson is for an EFL class of 7th and 8th graders in Paraguay. This
particular class focuses on listening as many students are considering or
preparing for the exchange student opportunity provided by a particular Illinois
grade school. They have had mostly national English teachers and need
practice listening to and understanding controlled native English speech.
Listening Objectives:
1) Students will demonstrate ability to comprehend the gist of a
conversation.
2) Students will demonstrate ability to use context with new vocabulary.
3) Students will be able to identify important non-verbals in a conversation
Listening Texts:
1) Short recordings of descriptions of objects, ideas, or emotions
2) Short recordings of readings made by teacher from Divergent, book 1 of
the Divergent series
3) Short video clips from the movie Divergent of the same content
Pre-listening:
1) Class brainstorm: What books have been made into movies?
2) Class

discussion.
What books do you like to read?
Is it better to read a book or watch a movie based off the book?
How might watching a movie based off a book help you
understand the book?

3) Play the recordings of several short descriptions of objects, ideas, and

emotions (ex: a cylinder, organization, skeptical). Ask the students if
they know what is being described.
4) Introduce non-verbals. List and demonstrate a few (body language,
facial expressions, spatial factors). Ask students for demonstrations
of non-verbals. Now play the recordings again and act out some nonverbals. What do the students understand now from seeing nonverbals with the descriptions?
5) Introduce the Divergent series. Present a short book synopsis. Ask
who has read the book or seen the movie.

Listening:
1) First listening of Divergent recording 1. Listen for the main idea. Answer
the main questions: Who is talking? What are they talking about? Why?
2) Second listening of Divergent recording 1. Identify new words. Write in
a chart.
3) Third listening of Divergent recording 1. Listen for context clues to
define new vocabulary words.
4) Watch video clip of the same content and update vocabulary definition.
5) Discuss the importance of non-verbals in these scenarios.
6) Repeat steps 1 - 5 with recording 2.
7) Go over vocabulary chart of new words and definitions.
Post-listening:
1) In small groups, have students react to the exercise. What did they learn
about listening for clues to the gist of a conversation? What did they
learn about listening for context clues for words that are new to them?
How important are non-verbals?
2) Write a journal entry answering one of the questions:
a. How can listening for the gist of a conversation help me in a
school situation in the USA?
b. How can listening to context clues help me understand directions
when Im in a new English-speaking school?
c. How will watching non-verbals help me build relationships?
