Abstract
Abortion has been a topic that has been fought and debated a lot since 1973,
when abortion became as a legal option in the states. Till this day abortion is still a
very debatable issue, and even used as a discussion topic in Republican debates.
Many states, and people say that the abortion decision shouldve been handled and
decided within the states court. Abortion has caused so much division within the
country, because liberals see abortion as an option, when conservatives see it as a
wrongdoing. Many organizations have rise against this issue, and mostly focused on
Planned Parenthood, been funded by the taxpayers. Jails have been funded by
taxpayers money, why shouldnt Planned Parenthood be funded as well said Leslie
Marshall Radio Talk Host. This has been another big issue on the abortion matter,
why or who should be funding Planned Parenthood.

Introduction
According to Quartz.com a magazine website, in 2011 730,322 procedures for
abortion where conducted, eight of which resulted in death of the patient, the mother.
The rest of the patients where successful, this has giving a lot of people confidence on
abortion procedures. Now, each year according to studentsforlife.org, there is 1.1
million abortions in the United States, and nearly one out of four pregnancies end up
in abortion, 22%. Abortions have become very common, and popular now a days,
almost 50% of women who seek abortion have had one previous abortion, and
approximately 1/3 of American women have had abortion by age 45. This has been a
topic too fought, but also something that many people have turned for help.
What is an Abortion?
Abortion, is the termination of a human pregnancy. However the most
important question is, how this termination is accomplished. According to the
abortion facts website they are four legal procedures that are allow in the United
States, two of this this procedures are more popular, and preferred by the patients and
the doctors. The first procedure is called a Medical Abortion, this procedure has been
approved by the FDA since 2000, and is chosen by 19.1% of women. This procedure
terminates the pregnancy with two pills, the first one called mifepristone, and the
second one misoprostol, both taken within two days apart. The first pill,
mifepristone, is taken to stop the embryos to grow, than the second pill, misoprostol,
is taken to remove the embryo from the patients body. This procedure is the most
simple, and easiest procedure, and is mostly done before the embryo reaches 9 weeks,

and is about .75 inches long. The second most common procedure done within the
United States, is the surgical abortion. This surgery option is best consider, when the
embryo has reach a length of 2.5 inches. Fortunately, this is also a very simple
procedure, and faster than the Medical abortion procedure. The Surgical procedure is
done through suction, the fetus and the placenta are both aspirated out of the women,
and this takes about fifteen minutes. This procedure is considered once the embryo
has gowned, or is passes the 9th week period. The third procedure, is not very
selected among the other options, is the Dilation and Curettage. This procedures
works very similarly to the Surgical Procedure, except this one uses a steel knife to
cut into pieces the fetus, than vacuum out of the women, a lot of bleeding is usually
expected on this procedure. The last procedure is a little more gruesome, and this is
why this is only done after the third month of pregnancy. For this procedure, pliers
are inserted through the cervix into the uterus, than the abortionist cuts legs, arms and
other parts of the baby with a twisting motion. This is done till the head remains,
finally the skull is crushed and pulled out, than the physician must reassemble to body
to make sure no body parts where left behind. With any kind of medical and
surgical procedure, they will always be risk of some kind, said Dr. Joel Brind,
endocrinologist. For many of this procedures, pliers, and other surgical gear is
inserted into the womens uterus, and can cause risks of infections, and scarring of
course. However, they are more severe risks after an abortion procedure, and most of
this problems arent physical but, psychological problems. Many of this women
developed a depression and anxiety problem, others have sleep disturbances, eating

disorders, and some even developed relationship and sexual difficulties. For some the
issue will never go away.
Abortion, legal in the United States
Abortion is a right that has been fought for since 1951. When a citizen of
Texas wanted to make the court appeal a law that was passed by the district attorney
of Dallas County from 1951 to 1987. Norma McCorvey or know in court documents
as Jane Roe, was agreed to be heard by the Supreme Court, to appeal the las that
Henry Wade, district attorney of Dallas county, passed in Texas that no women could
get an abortion, unless to save womens life. The case started December 13, 1971
when the case started to be argued before the US Supreme Court, until January 22,
1973, when the Supreme Court in a vote of seven to two, decided to give women the
right to have an abortion under the fourteenth amendment of the constitution.
However Jane Roe changed her mind, in June 17, 2003. According to CNN Library,
Roe filed a motion to the US district court of Dallas to overturned the case, and to
look more into detail to see that abortion actually does hurt women, and with her she
had one thousand affidavits form women who retreated having an abortion. In
September of 2004, a three-judge panel of the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New
Orleans dismisses the motion that Joe filed against the Roe v. Wade case.
Conclusion
Despite the differences that have occurred over the years in regards abortion, whether
someone chooses to abort, or not there is always help. Many organizations have
come together to help those who need it. Organizations like Planned Parenthood,
have help many single mothers who dont think they can handle or take good care of a

newborn. Or other organizations like Birth Mothers, have help new mom who choose
to have the baby, but dont have the resources or the experience, to become better at
what they are willing to give a chance.
