Lack of Proper and Impactful

Technology Use
What we know:
Improper use of technology in the classroom
Some teachers, experts say, still are reluctant
to use technology, mostly because of a lack of
time, a lack of resources, or a lack of
confidence in their ability to use the available
technology.

(Linda Starr Encouraging Teacher Technology Use)

Our Theory of Incorporating

Technology Effectively
1. Technology as a form of Communication

Expand audiences
Collaborate with one another
2. Technology that advances student Learning
Students are able to research on the web
Learn for themselves
Artifacts from across the world
3. Technology that Tests student achievement
Methods that teachers use to make testing more efficient

HISTORY OF
TECHNOLOGY IN THE
CLASSROOM

How have we gotten to the point of

personal computers and
overwhelming technology in the
classroom?

How can we hope to teach

without the proper tools and
without being one step ahead
of our students?

ARE TEACHERS
IMPLEMENTING THIS
TECHNOLOGY?

Teacher Interview
Teacher
1st year teacher
Private high school
6 laptops/classroom, 1 computer lab, 2 laptop carts
Uses technology an estimate of 1/week *small part of
lesson
Kahootreview tool
School does not provide training session on proper
technology use
Downfall to technology: cell phones

Teacher Interview
All three used technology everyday
Mainly classroom management sites
Canvas and Google Classroom
Not really using technology in a variety of ways

Student Interview
Student
12th grade
Public high school
1 to 1 laptops (Mac books), 3 computer labs, smart boards
Students only use smart boards in math. Other
teachers with smart boards just use it themselves.
Quizletreview tool
Primary use of laptop: take notes with

Overall Findings from the

Interviews

Do not utilize technology as a way to create,

learn, or research
Do not utilize technology as a way to test
Do not utilize technology as a way communicate

Interview with Dr. Scott

Scheuerell
Research Question: How are social studies teachers designing

meaningful teaching and learning lessons that integrate technology?

5 Important things to consider when using technology:

1. Give background info before students investigate?
2. Cooperative learning groups or individually?
3. Tiered instruction or a one-size fits all?
4. Thick or thin questions?
5. Dive in or generate a hypothesis, what comes first?
Findings:
. I encourage teacher candidates to examine the research-based
frameworks that researchers in the field of educational
technology have made a point of emphasis for the secondary
classroom

Rigor and Relevance Framework

Mindtools
Students learning with not from technology
Technology tools that help students organize and construct knowledge
Stimulates the brain, teases the mind to think, channels the minds ability to
operate in a high capacity
Types of mindtools:
Database
Graphing
Concept mapping
Search Internet
Visualization
Mindtools
Constructivism
