Learning Activity Plan for Infants and Toddlers

Teacher Candidate: Katheryne Rodriguez

Date of Scheduled Visit:
Name/Address of School: CAS East Harlem Learning Center
Age Group: 4s
Cooperating Teacher: Ms. Janet
Room Number: Blue Room
Title of the Lesson:
Monster Puppets
Brief Description of the lesson: Students will be able to make a plate puppet
Developmental Focus
Fine motor skills: A lot of my kids seem to have difficulty with fine motor
skills and scissor cutting. This will give them an opportunity to cut but with
a special sock puppet to help maneuver their fingers (for those that need it).
Social emotional skills: Understanding their own emotions and experiences to
make connections to texts and interactions with peers.
Expanding vocabulary by expressing themselves in sentences (the teacher
will scaffold this).
Objective(s):
This lesson will allow the kids to internalize the story of Where The Wild Things Are
and reflect on moments when they are wild in their daily lives. This will deepen their
comprehension of the text by making the character of Max relatable.
Connection to Standards (if applicable) (Be sure to specify which set of standards
you are working with to construct your learning activity) Teaching Strategies Gold:
Literacy: 18) Comprehends and responds to books and other texts. A)
Interacts during read alouds and book conversations.
Cognitive: Remembers and connects experiences. A) Recognizes and recalls.
B) Makes connections
Math: Explores and describes spatial relationships and shapes. B)
Understands shapes.
Relevance/Rationale:
They are important because they will support the childrens comprehension of the
text. This will also help them make connections and reflect on past experiences.
Time Needed: 30 minutes for the activity. This could be done right after the read
aloud as one of the centers or the day after. The read aloud should not be more than
15 minutes.
Instructional Context:
This activity will be done as a center in increments of small group rotations. After
the reading the students will be advised that they are going to do an awesome art
activity in the art center. A teacher will be there to explain and help facilitate this

activity.
Procedure: (step by step)
1. Teacher will introduce the activity and show them an example of a completed
monster. Today we are going to make our own monsters and talk about when
we are wild at home including reading over sentence. For example:
Demonstrate monster and read sentence, I am wild whenmy mom tells me
its bedtime. Afterwards, we can color our monsters any color we want!
Then we will cut and glue the shapes on the construction paper to make the
faces of the monsters.
2. Teacher will go around helping students.
3. As students are working the teacher walk around asking the activity
question: I am wild when
4. When completed this could be hung around the room with sentence strips
under the monster faces.
Attention Grabbers (if needed):
Teacher says, hands up and students put their hands up and say, that
means stop
They will be dismissed to center time by singing the robot song. When their
name is called they dance in the middle of the circle and walk like a robot to
centers.
Resources/Materials Needed:
Paper plates
Crayons
Glue
Scissors
Construction paper of different colors with shapes
Marker and white cut out paper for teacher
Room modifications:
I would like to put music in the background to encourage the kids to be more
focused while making the activity fun.
Plan for differentiated instruction/Instructional modifications:
I will be using a sock puppet (that would be premade) with two wholes in the front
to accommodate challenges with fingers while holding scissors. Children that get too
distracted would be given more time throughout the week to finish puppets.
Method of assessing childrens growth and learning:
Pictures
Noting how well students have cut their shapes to glue on their monsters.
How they recall and express their experiences to the teacher.

Observing different attention spans.
Follow-up/Extension Activities
After this activity is done a chart can be done together as a class later on the same
week. It will be called When We Are Wild At School We Can. And list things
like: talk about it, breathe in big balloons and blow out the candles, walk it out, talk
to a teacher or a friend, draw a picture etc.
Any additional information that would be helpful for the observer to know:
Some of my students are not used to fully expressing ideas and experiences. They
would do things like play by themselves instead of asking a friend to play with them.
Encouraging them to always use their words and express themselves has been one of
my main focuses.

Observer feedback on the lesson plan, including commendations and

recommendations for improving aspects of the learning activity
