Topic: Poem about ocean


Grade Level: Kindergarten
Time/Duration: 20 minutes
Description:

Students will demonstrate rhythm by doing a free write about the ocean.
Students will write a short poem about the ocean and illustrate a picture

at the end of each verse.


When students are finished with the short poem, they will read it out
loud to their classmates.

State Content Standards:

CA 1-speaking and writing standard English (including grammar, usage,

punctuation, spelling, capitalization)


CA 2- reading and evaluating poetry
CA 4- writing formally for poem and informally for brainstorming
CA 5-comprehending and evaluating the content and artistic aspects of
oral and visual presentations.

Objectives:

Demonstrate concept of basic print (GLE 1A)


Produce rhyming words. (GLE 1B)
Develops awareness where pictures can tell the story of text (GLE 3A)

Materials:

Pencil
Crayons
Paper

Procedure:

First, the teacher will pass out the paper to the students. If there is a
helper for the day then she/he will help the teacher.

Then, the teacher will ask the students to write everything that they

know about the ocean.


The teacher will give the students 5 minutes to brainstorm.
Next, the students will be asked to pick out things from their
brainstorming that they think are important or would like to include in

their poem.
Students are to create a short poem about the ocean based on what they

know.
Next, the students are to illustrate by drawing a picture to each verse in

the poem.
After students are finished writing and illustrating their poem, the

teacher chooses a child to read their poem to the class first.


The entire class will receive a chance.
The teacher may choose to put their work in the classroom library after
they have presented them.

Assessment:

Assessment will be done through observation of the students completing

their poems and illustrating pictures that go along with the verses.
Assessment will also be completed when the students are presenting
their short poems about the ocean, to the class. (Each student is
responsible for the pictures that go along with the end of each line.)

Multiple Intelligences:

Visual/Spatial- illustrations and pictures of each verse in the poem.


Verbal/Linguistic- reading poem aloud to classmates and listening to

others share.
Bodily/Kinesthetic- writing with a pen and paper
Interpersonal- group and class work, brainstorming to understand about
the ocean.

Blooms Taxonomy:

Knowledge- Students recognize rhyming sounds. List, choose and pick


ideas that they would like to use from brainstorming. Reorganize
thoughts to fit poem.

Comprehension- Students relate to what they already know about the


ocean. Students express in own words what they write in their poem.

Students write down poem and understand it.


Application- students draw pictures for each verse.
Synthesis- students arrange, plan, organize and create ideas about the
ocean on paper from what they already know.

Modifications:

If needed, students could work in pairs to complete the assignment.


If needed, the teacher could have part of an ocean poem written up on
the chalkboard and the students could copy it down to get them started.
