Time/Duration: approximately 30 minutes
Description:

Students will understand that there are many different types of animals

in the sea.
Students will find out where they live.

State Content Standards:


CA 2- Reading and evaluating fiction, poetry and drama.
CA 5- Comprehending and evaluating the content and artistic aspects of
oral and visual presentations.
Objectives:

Students will develop the ability to have awareness through discussion.

(GLE 1A)
Students will follow a guide for reference. (GLE 3D)
Students will plan and tell ideas to the teacher of that subject (GLE 3C)

Materials:
At the Beach With Dad by Gina and Mercer Mayer
Curious George Goes to the Beach by H.A. Rey
Ziploc bag for each child
Sand
Shaving Cream
Blue Food Coloring
Seashells
Small plastic sea animals
Procedure:

Read At the Beach With Dad by Gina and Mercer Mayer.


Talk about the things that they saw at the beach and what they did.

Next, tell the students We are going to explore what kinds of things we

think we may see at the beach.


Ask the students Where are the beaches?
Then, all time for children to create their own beach to take home.
Call up one table at a time
Pour enough sand to cover the bottom of the Ziploc bag.
Add seashells (make sure they have no sharp edges), and beach

inhabitants.
Squirt some shaving cream into the bag.
Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the bag.
Close the Ziploc bag and squeeze around it.
This will mix the shaving cream and food coloring to create foamy waves.
After students have finished, read Curious George Goes to the Beach by
H.A. Rey.

Assessment:

Assessment will be completed by observation.


Assessment will be completed by student participation.

Multiple Intelligences:

Visual/Spatial- Students will be able to look at final result of beach in a

bag. Illustrations in the book will also be visual.


Logical/Mathematical- Students will count how many sea creatures they

put into their bag.


Bodily/Kinesthetic- Students will create an ocean in a bag (beach)
Naturalist- Students will see how animals live.

Blooms Taxonomy:

Knowledge- Students will pick and choose what animals they would like

to have in their beach.


Application- Students will make an ocean in a bag
Synthesis- Students will collect everything that they need to do the
experiment, and then they will combine everything together to make the
project.

Modifications:

If needed, students could work with a partner to complete the project,

however only one person would be lucky enough to take it home.


If needed, teacher could have the bags of ocean already made up for the
students.
