What is a Surveying Level

Description:
A surveying level is used to make a three-dimensional map of a surface of the earth, or,
simply finding the elevation between two points. This three-dimensional map is called a contour
map. Surveyors use the surveying level to determine elevation differences between two points.
These points are usually patterned like a grid. Once the surveyor completes the grid he is able
to compute and draw a contour map of the area the grid covers. Generally a level circuit is
begun with a BS or Backsite which will determine the height of the level. Then a FS or Foresight
is determined to check the change in elevation between the two points. This is then repeated
many times to determine the fluctuations of elevation. We call this repeating process the level
circuit. The level is mainly used to map out an area which is about to undergo construction. It
takes a two man crew to operate and efficiently use the surveying level. One to determine the
measurements, documents the data, and move the level, the other to hold the measuring stick.

Overview
Parts of a Surveying Level
Penta Mirror

While you are adjusting the leveling screws to get the level into
position, you can now look through the Penta Mirror to see the
circular level and ensure the level is in position by placing the
bubble in the circle by rotating the leveling screws. This is so that
you do not accidentally move the tripod and have to start over.

Focusing Knob

As you change distances with the measuring stick you have to

use this knob to focus in the stick so that it is easier to read.

Eyepiece Lens

This lens is used to look through to determine the measurement

that is on the measuring stick.

Optical Sight

Used for lining up the level to the measuring stick, it is used to

get close to the measuring stick and then you go to the
horizontal fine-motion knob to line up perfectly.

Telescope

Magnifying lens connected to the eyepiece lens which will allow

the user to see more distant measurements.

Horizontal circle Revolver

Revolves the telescope horizontally in a smooth turning motion

to ensure sufficient and accurate measurements.

Base Plat

Secures the telescope to the horizontal circle revolver, also a

hard cover to protect all the internal mechanics.

Horizontal Fine-Motion
Knob

Knob that rotates the pedestal, used for the minor turns.

Leveling Screws

There are three screws at the base of the surveying level that
are used to position the level.

Circular Level

Determines if the level is in the correct position. i.e. the bubble is

inside the circle. If the bubble is not inside the circle your
measurements will be incorrect.

Securing Screw

Secures the level to the tripod, can be found at the bottom of the
platform where the level sits.

Tripod

Secures the level at a comfortable position for the user and also
in a position where it will not be easily knocked out of place.

Measuring Stick

Target for the level. Accurate up to 1/10th of a foot. Usually

around 9 feet tall.
