A square aluminum plate 5 mm thick and 200 mm side is heated while vertically suspended in qui air at 40°C. Determine the average heat transfer cient for the plate when its temperature is 15°C by methods: using results from the similarity soluti the boundary layer equations, and using results f empirical correlation. Consider an array of vertical rectangular fins, to be used to cool an electronic device mounted quiescent, atmospheric air at 7, = 27°C. Each fin L=20mm and H = 150mm and operates at approximately uniform temperature of T, = 77°C. (a) Viewing each fin surface as a vertical plate in infinite, quiescent medium, briefly describe there exists an optimum fin spacing S. Figure 9.4, estimate the optimum value of $ for prescribed conditions. For the optimum value of S and a fin thickness += LS mm, estimate the rate of heat transfer the fins for an array of width W = 355 mm. (b) A horizontal uninsulated steam pipe passes through a large room whose walls and ambient air are at 300 K. The pipe of 150-mm diameter has an emissivity of 0.85 and an outer surface temperature of 400 K. Calculate the heat loss per unit length from the pipe. A long, uninsulated steam line with a diameter of 89 mm and a surface emissivity of 0.8 transports steam at 200°C and is exposed (o atmospheric air and large surroundings at an equivalent temperature of 20°C. (a) Calculate the heat loss per unit length for a calm day. (b) Calculate the heat loss on a breezy day when the wind speed is 8 m/s. (c) For the conditions of part (a), calculate the heat loss with a 20-mm-thick layer of insulation (k= 0.08 W/m + K). Would the heat loss change signifi- cantly with an appreciable wind speed?
