Jpeg Joint photographic expert group

this file format is often supported by
all major operating systems. Jpeg
works best for digital images as the
edges and tones are softened and
smoothed,
they
are
also
then
compressed. Jpeg is not well suited for
graphic design images and there is a
lack of support for transparent images.
The size allows it to be perfect for
websites as images can be uploaded
quickly.
Gif
abbreviated
as
Graphics
interchange format popular for it
portability and support. This format
mainly supports animation which
works by playing a sequence of
images. Although, there isnt a loss of
quality, the overall quality of images
doesnt compare to other file formats.
Gif is also good for the use of websites
due to the quality and small file size.
Tiff is used for storing bitmap graphics
and can work on a range of operating
systems. It is often printer that prefer
or require TIFF files over JPG images.
TIFF files dont require compression
but can be if needed which is why TIFF
is beneficial for desktop publishing and
print design because they can store
high quality and larger images such as
photos.
Portable network graphics (PNG) is the
most used file format. PNG has a
better image quality than JPEG and
also useful to graphic designers due to
the
support
for
transparency.
Negatively, it is not compatible with
animation unlike GIF. PNG is mainly
useful digital graphic images.
BMP is short for bitmap and is
recognised
on
the
majority
of
operating platforms and systems. This
format allows for the storage of colour
data for each pixel in an image without
compression, hence the large file size.
This method allows for high quality
graphics. BMP is mainly used for
printable images as opposed to JPEG

Images are
manually
compressed and
therefore are small
in size.

Small image size

but large enough
to keep the image
quality.

Can be
compressed and
adapted
depending on the
image.

Can have a large

file size depending
on
the

Encapsulated
postscript
vector
graphics abbreviated as EPS which
works in adobe illustrator. Unlike the
other file formats, this file format can
contain text as well as graphics. This
format also contains a bit map version
of the image for simpler viewing.
Al is a file format used in Adobe
Illustrator and is a file extension for
vector graphics. This format allows for
vector graphics to be created, edited
and opened.
Scalable vector graphics (SVG) allows
for 2D images to be displayed on the
web in XML. SVG images are scalable
to the size of the web page and will
adjust in size and resolution according
to the demand of the user. This format
is very flexible. This format also allows
for file animation.
