Neanderthals in Macedonia
ABSTRACT
In the early 1960s, two important early finds, an Acheulean handaxe from Paleokastro near
Siatista and a Homo heidelbergensis cranium from Petralona in Chalkidiki, placed Macedonia
and thereby Greece itself on the world Palaeolithic map. This promising beginning, however,
was not followed by systematic research focused on the period. By the end of the 20th century,
the Palaeolithic record of Macedonia was still scanty and discontinuous, with more questions
than answers regarding the presence of hominins in the area, their spatiotemporal dispersal,
and their cultural and technological world and networks. However, over the last ten years
this picture has been changing rapidly. In this study we give the research agendas and results
of work in progress conducted in two different landscapes and environments of western Macedonia, the highland Pindus in Grevena and the Orestias lake basin in Kastoria, carried out by
the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Crete respectively. We address
and evaluate the emerging evidence on Middle Palaeolithic settlement patterns and habitat
preferences in Northern Greece. Although comparing a biological factor to archaeological
remains is fraught with uncertainties, in Mainland Greece, the Middle Palaeolithic remains
appear to be mainly associated with Homo neanderthalensis. After a brief overview of the
available evidence on Neanderthal anatomy, mode of life and material culture, we conclude
by examining the ways in which the Neanderthal findings from Macedonia are grafted on to
the trunk of data on Palaeolithic Greece.
