Learning Intention:
I will be able to explain the process and requirements to obtain a
Canadian Passport.
Rationale:
Students have been learning in previous lessons about Canada as
a nation including the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms as
well as the challenges of being an immigrant. This will connect in
to the immigration process and current citizens in the area of
obtaining a Canadian passport.

Grade 5:
Big Ideas- Immigration and multiculturalism continue to shape
Canadian society and identity.
Curricular Competencies- Use Social Studies inquiry processes
and skill to: ask questions; gather, interpret, and analyze ideas;
and communicate findings and decisions.

Levels of government, their main functions, and sources
of funding
The changing nature of Canadian immigration over time
Grade 6:
Big Ideas- Systems of government vary in their respect for human
rights and freedoms.

Lesson Development:
Introduction/Hook: (5 minutes)
1.) We will start the lesson with taking a poll on who
has a passport and from which country they hold a
passport from.
Teaching/Learning Sequence:

2.) We will go through a quick PowerPoint on
Why we need to have passports
How a passport came to be
What is on/in the passport
3.) We will then together have a look at the
application for a passport in Canada.
What the requirements are and what the different
sections are.
4.) Students will then have time to work on a
scavenger hunt to find different aspects of the
application of the passport.

Closure:

(5 minutes)

5.) As closure, we will review the learning intention

and have the students will out a ticket out the door
telling us one thing they didnt know about the
Canadian Passport.
Extensions/Accommodations:
Students who finish early can work on a passport word
search.
Students who finish early can work on other school
work they need time to catch up on.
Jett and Zoelle may need some scribing to be done for
them.
Mark might need to work with a partner to help
understand the questions.

Reflection:
This lesson was very successful not only were students engaged
students were able to explore the process and requirements to
obtain a Canadian passport using the application process.
Students were able to work together to use each other to fill out
there mock applications. Students are ready for the next lesson to
start creating their own passports.
