HOMEWORK
Design of a narrow, hydrodynamic (HD) journal bearing

A HD journal bearing of diameter D and width B operates normally under the vertical load F, at
the nominal speed n. The bearing is fed with mineral oil at the inlet pressure pin and inlet
temperature tin, through a d0 diameter orifice.
The hydrostatic flow rate can be calculated with:

Q = cq sec ( )

where the flow rate coefficient is:

The temperature-viscosity relationship for the lubricant is given by the following YarchowTheissen formula:
50 T
(T ) 50 exp b

95 T
where 50 is the reference viscosity at reference temperature, 50 and b a specific constant.

Consider the influence of thermal expansion on the initial clearance assuming that only the shaft
(made of steel with =1210-6 1/K) expands (the sleeve is blocked on radial direction).
Assuming the effective temperature in the bearing, the average of the inlet and outlet oil
temperature and that the entire heat produced by viscous drag in the bearing is rejected by the
lubricant, calculate bearing performance characteristics for 6 equally spaced values of the relative
clearance in the range (1 3), and select a suitable standard fit (tolerances for shaft and
sleeve).
STEPS:
1. Calculate the working parameters (temperature, minimum thickness, flow rate, power loss
through friction) for one value of the relative clearance.
2. Calculate the working for all 6 values of the relative clearance.
3. Plot the working parameters with respect to the relative clearance and establish a minimum
and maximum clearance for an optimum operation of the journal bearing.
4. Calculate the minimum and maximum clearance at 20 oC, and establish suitable standard fit
(the hub-shaft tolerances).
