Thismanualismeanttobeashortversionofthe100pageGMSYSManualpdffile.If
youhavetroublewiththissoftware,letmeknow,andIllhelpyouworkitoutand
includetheexplanation/solution(ifthereisone)infutureversions.
1. Introduction
a. GMSYSisforwardmodelingsoftwareforgravityandmagneticsprofiles.It
calculatessyntheticdatafrommodelsthatyougeneratethatyoucancompare
withrealelevationsandstationdata,oryoucanjustgeneratemodels.
b. DATAPOINTS:WehavetheLABedition,thatwilltakeamaximumof35
gravityandmagneticstations,300elevationpoints,and7modelblocks.
2. Creatingamodel.
a. startGMSYS
b. SelectFile:NewModel
c. followthedirectionsinthenewmodelcreationbox.Creationisinthree
steps:
1)settingtheverticalandhorizontalextentofyourmodel(changetheunitsas
necessary)
2)Forconveniencelater,checkaddflathorizonsandinsertoneortwoflat
horizonsatreasonabledepths(NegativedepthsareABOVEtheground)
3)Formagneticsonly:setprofileazimuthsrelativetostrike.Formagntics,
changetheprofileazimuthto0(NSdirection).
4)Enteringstationandelevationdata.ChooseEquallyspacedflatforyour
initialmodel,andchooseareasonablespacingandnumberofstations.
Dontforgettochangetoappropriateunits.Notethattopographyand
stationdatadoNOThavetobeatthesamelocations.Infact,your
elevationdata(forgravity)shouldextendwellbeyondyourstationdata.
Formagneticsandsimplegravitymodels,choosenoneforTopography.
Youwillbeabletoeditandaddtothesevalueslater.
5)Formagneticsonly:enterearthsfield:enter37,000nTand40inclination
withadeclinationof0

Windowandnoticethateachiconhasanamevisiblewhenthecurserrestsonit.
Theseactionsallowyoutoeditthemodel.Herearesomeusefulactions:
a)BOXZOOM:IntheActionwindow,clickonBoxZoom.
1.Inthemodelpane,clickononecornerofaregionyouwouldliketoexpand.
2.Withtheleftclickpressed,movetotheoppositecornerandrelease.
Youwillnowseeonlythatregionwithintheboxyouselected.Tozoomout,click
onzoomoutandclickinthemodelpanewhereyouwouldlikethecenter
tobe.
3.Togetbacktoyourinitialview,gotoView:Startup
b.ADDALAYER:clickonaddpointintheActionWindow
1.gotoVIEW:infinity
2.GotoAddPointandaddonepointtoeachmodelboundaryoneachsideof
themodel
3.clickonsplitblockintheActionmenu
4.clickononeofthenewpointsandthenontheother.Anewblockboundary
willappearbetweenthetwopoints.Youwillbeaskedhowyouwantto
changetheparametersinthenewblock.Iftheprogramdoesnotdothis
operation.Youlikelyhavetoomanyblocks.
c.CHANGEMODELVALUES.ClickonExamine
1.Clickinablock.Amenupopsupthatallowsyoutochangethecharacteristics
ofthatblock.
2.Clickonapoint.Amenupopsupthatallowsyoutochangethelocationofthat
point.
3.ClickonMovePoint.Thenclickandholdonanypointasyoumoveit.You
shouldseetheanomalychange.Ifyoudontseeachange,thenthepointyou
aremovingisonaboundarythathasnochangeintheparameteryouare
lookingat.
d)ADDAHorizontallyLimitedBlock.

1.addtwonewpointstoaboundaryyouwouldliketomodify.
2.gotoActionsplitblockandmakeanewblockbetweenthetwonewpoints,
clickingwhereyouwouldlikepointsonthenewboundary,andendingatthe
2ndpointyouaddedabove.Acceptthenewblock.
3.gotoAction:EXAMINEandclickinsideyournewblock
4.changetheparameterstoyournewvalues.

ForwardModelingguidelines:
1.KIS:Keepitsimple!
2.Beginwithflatlayersthathaveparametersreasonableforexpectedrocktypesfor
yourarea.
3.Ifyouhaveagradientinyourdata,modelitwithadeeplayerthathasaslope
suchthatthegradientismodeledaswellaspossible(theerrorcurveshould
averageaboutzero).
