For Competency 2: Create Knowledge, I chose my paper Creating a Culture of Learning

in a Corporate Environment, written for EDCI 513, as the artifact to demonstrate my
proficiency in this area.
Demonstrates ability to describe common research methods in Educational Technology
In this paper I reference ten different pieces of literature, ranging from academic journal
articles to expert blogs and company websites, all touching on educational technology in some
way. I use these references in the paper for a variety of reasons to help define the term
learning culture and its benefits, to demonstrate the tenets of effective and desirable training in
a business environment, and to sufficiently discuss the application of adult learning theory and its
role in the creation of a learning culture. I also make suggestions for further research at the end
of the paper. My ability to describe common research methods in Educational Technology was
demonstrated as I detailed the research findings on web based training in my discussion of the
solutions the fictitious company implemented to solve their training problem.
Demonstrates ability to read and evaluate Educational Technology research
The presence and use of the literature references in this paper, not just quoting the authors
of the pieces, but also synthesizing and further discussing their ideas, demonstrates my ability to
read, evaluate, and apply literature related to Educational Technology. For example, after
referencing a number of authors perspectives on the benefits of e-learning and its usefulness for
geographically dispersed audiences, I state in my paper, Although delivering content through
the web, whether it be in e-learning, webcasts or webinars, seems like an ideal option to deliver

content to geographically dispersed populations and saves cost, further research needs to be done
on the rate of retention of the content delivered this way. Research has been done on the
favorable effects of electronic and web-based simulations, especially in the food service industry
and healthcare, however, what of the fact-based content delivered using e-learning?
Applies research findings to the solution of common problems in Educational Technology
Finally, my research findings were applied in the discussion of the solution to the
problem the fictional company presented in my paper was having. The company needed to
have newly hired employees proficient at their jobs faster than the face-to-face classes were
allowing and they needed to do it while reducing the cost of travel of all new hires to the
company headquarters and the cost of the employees being away from their jobs. The solution of
providing self-paced eLearning modules for foundational training alongside on-the-job training
by the manager or a tenured coach was backed by the research found and was discussed at length
in this paper.
