21-year old Alani Letang said that, as a graduate student at Wayne State University, she is
provided the opportunity to test her education abilities.

I like Wayne State a lot, said Letang. It gives me a challenging experience. And if I wasnt
being challenged, there really wouldnt be a point in me pursuing a graduate degree.

As a graduate student, Letang said, she feels both alike and diverse in her Reporting on Race,
Gender and Culture course.

I feel alike to other students in the class because we all have some interest in journalism, she
said. But, me being a grad student plays a major role in me feeling different.

On the first day of class, Letang said, she felt a sense of inclusion during classroom
introductions.

When everyone went around and introduced themselves as journalists, I felt included because I
knew I wasnt only going to be just the grad student that everyone looked at differently, she
said.

Letang said sharing the true understanding of journalism has allowed her to feel like her peers.

The acknowledgement of journalism is what makes me feel at ease in the class, she said. Its
like we have our own language as journalists. For example, no one else would understand words
like leads, packages or standups like we do. So sharing that with people in the class doesnt make
me feel different.

Aside from feeling like everyone in the class, being a grad student also comes with feeling
different because of the expectations, said Letang.

I feel like I have to uphold more, she said. Yes, we all are journalism students, but Im
expected by our professor to do better because Im on a different level. And sometimes this
makes me feel different because who wants to be on a higher level than their classmates?

Feeling a little different from others in the class does not have an impact on the learning
environment, said Letang.

I like COM 4250, she said. I dont believe feeling diverse has affected how interesting I find
the class and how much I learn. As a student who feels a little different from her classmates, I
just go on about my day and do what I have to do.
