SOUTHEAST ASIA-JAPAN ADVANCED SEMINAR ON PHILIPPINE STUDIES

The 2016 Southeast Asia-Japan Advanced Seminar on Philippine
Studies will take place in the Philippines with 20 participants, ten from Japan
and ten from Southeast Asia. The advanced seminar is a project of the
Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program (SEASREP), with support
from the Japan Foundation Asia Center. Consisting of five days of intensive
lectures and in-depth discussions and one day of a lecture-tour, the seminar
will focus on various aspects of the Philippines. Local experts from different
disciplines will deliver lectures supported by selected readings.
The seminar is generally intended to deepen understanding of
Southeast Asia and provide a setting for the academic interaction of Japanese
and Southeast Asian scholars. In particular, the 2016 seminar aims to:

Deepen understanding of the Philippines through in-depth, intensive


lectures, discussions and readings; and

2.

Provide a venue where Japanese and Southeast Asian scholars can


meet and work with one another and build networks for future research
collaboration.

The seminar will focus on various aspects of the Philippines: its history,
society and culture, politics, economy, and a special topic on Filipinos in
Japan.
The seminar is open to M.A./Ph.D. students, young university faculty
and research staff in the social sciences, humanities, and the arts.
Participants should be proficient in English, which is the main language of the
seminar. Other qualifications are:

If student or research staff, has done research on the Philippines or


comparative research about the Philippines and another Southeast
Asian country (provide title and abstract of research); and/or

If faculty member, has taught a humanities or social science course


on Southeast Asia or Asia at least once;

Preferably below 35 years old;

For Southeast Asians, must reside within the Southeast Asian


region; for Japanese; must reside in Japan or Southeast Asia; and

Is willing to engage in multicultural interaction.

The seminar will take place on 16-21 May 2016 at the National
Historical Commission of the Philippines, T.M. Kalaw St., Manila.
Interested applicants may send (by email) a one-page biodata and
signed letter of intent (scanned) explaining his or her interest in the seminar to
aseas@seasrepfoundation.org on or before 1 April 2016. Notice of admission
to the seminar will be sent by 8 April 2016 along with other details.
The SEASREP travel grant includes airfare (budget economy), meals
during the seminar (except dinner), accommodation, local transportation, and
seminar kits.
