HRE 1O1: Grade-9 Open Religious Education: Be With Me


Course Overview
The grade 9 Religion program examines what it means to be a follower of Christ and to live out the
faith that the Catholic community professes in the Creed. Using the Beatitudes as a foundation, it
explores the attitudes and actions that characterize Christian life. Students are encouraged to
understand and nurture within themselves the virtues that will enable them to deepen their
relationship with God, in and through Christ, in the context of spirit-filled community.

The Scripture Supplement requires sometimes the use of a Bible for homework assignments.

Assessment & Evaluation: This course uses balanced assessment aligned with the Ontario Ministry of
Education document Growing Success as well as the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board's assessment
and evaluation policies. An approach of learning for, as and of learning will be used. For instance, throughout the
semester, there will be many opportunities to practice a skill and receive feedback before a formal evaluation
takes place. Students will be asked to reflect on their own learning and progress. Likewise, students will be told
in advance about tests, assignments and presentations. An accompanying marking scheme with instructions will
help students in completing the assignment successfully.
The Ontario Curriculum, Program Planning and Assessment 2000 specifies that the mark for the course is to be based
upon ongoing or term work (70%) and a final assessment (30%). The final assessment is broken down into a final
culminating activity (10%) and a final examination (20%).

The ongoing or term work will include reflections, small written assignments, literacy initiatives, reports,
presentations, quizzes, and unit tests. The final assessment will include a project, and a final exam.
Within these two areas, marks will be obtained using the four categories specified in the Catholic Course Profile for
Religious Education, Grade 9 Open.

Learning Skills and Work Habits


Although a numerical grade will not be assigned under this category, the teacher will report on these skills and habits
with E, G, S, and/or N values (excellent, good, satisfactory and needs improvement). The learning skills and work
habits include responsibility, organization, independent work, collaboration, initiative and self-regulation. As a
student develops and expands these skills and habits, he/she will immediately see positive results in their learning
and academic achievements.

Course Materials
TEXTBOOK Be With Me This text may be used by students in class or may be taken home for
the evening at the discretion of the teacher. Any damage or loss incurred will result in payment for
replacement. The replacement cost of the textbook will be $30.00. Students may also have use of the
Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC).
