Highlight the main purpose of this article was to:
Inform

Argue
Entertain
Write a complete sentence that expresses the main idea/claim of the article. Dont begin by saying
The article says or This article is about. Do state the main idea of the article (e.g.: An increased
number of homeless students are attending American high schools.)

By reaching out for help, Helene found out that treated depression with others around her halved the
burden of fighting it alone.

In complete sentences below, list three examples, facts, or supporting details from the article that
support the main idea/claim you identified above.
1. I just carried round this massive weight and I was tired and very, very emotional. But,
again, I was quite stiff upper lip at the time so I wasnt someone who cried in public or anything,
Id just come back to my house and just feel absolutely miserable and think I shouldnt be like
this, this isnt right, cos it was carrying on for too long.
2. I dont like to share too much with people. Sometimes Im worried that theyll go, Oh,
God, shes one of those people, and not want anything to do with it or put it in the too hard
basket. I think with anything that happens in your life there are some people that come forward
and step up and support you and then theres other people that just go, I dont need this, Ive got
enough in my own life right now.
3. The message for me is dont be scared to ask for help and dont leave it till its all too
late. If you feel like you need help and youve got maybe no one in your immediate circle that you
can talk to, make an appointment with a GP or make an appointment with a counsellor and really
dont be shy to reach out and ask for a hand. Thats the worst thing is when you try and deal with
too much yourself and really you need a little bit of intervention.

Below, demonstrate one or two inferences you made or conclusions you drew based on the evidence
presented.
Inference: Some people actually want to help those who are experiencing depression but simply cant
find the time to offer it.

Details from the text that support this inference:

The author stated that one of the reasons others didnt help her was that they simply go I dont need
this, Ive got enough in my own life right now. Although the way she worded it was slightly biased, it
shows that they had a reason not to help. To tune it down to a less severe scenario that has often
happened to me: often times I want to go to social events that our school hosts, but I have classes and
extra work, so I cant attend them. The first and last social event Ive attended was in fifth grade.

Inference: Helenes GP is a very compassionate and understanding person.

Details from the text that support this inference:

The moment Helenes GP diagnosed her with depression, she immediately suggested ways of treatment:
exercise, medication and therapy. Helene didnt like the person that the GP suggested, but she [the GP]
didnt get mad and force Helene to stick with her suggestion. Instead, she recommended other
psychologists and searched around for someone who would be a good match to help Helene treat

her depression. According to Helene, Shes fantastic and Ill get in and see her and shes got
my case history and she knows straight away by looking at me. When her GP sees something
wrong, she immediately goes through different options that Helene can take to improve her
condition such as suggesting a change or increase in medicine.
