Myfavoritelineofthearticle,theclosingline,beautifullysummarizedtheauthorsmain
point.

WhentheprofoundcontributionsofAfricanAmericansbefore,during,andaftertheir
enslavementarerecognized,thentheirhumanityandthereforemyhumanityis
undeniable,andblackliveswould,infact,matter.
Idonthaveanextensiveknowledgeofblack
history,butasanaverageamericanthatlearnedfromanaverageamericanschoolsystem,the
prominentthemethatstaughtisamericanslavery.
Peopleshouldlearnthishistorybecause
everyoneshouldknowthatmyblackancestorswerehumans,notslaves.
Theharshrealityis
suchaslaptheface:whenwearetaughtthatagroupofpeoplearelessthan(ex.slaves)right
fromthebeginningweautomaticallydehumanizethosepeopleandhaverootedracismintoour
education.

Samesexmarriagewaslegalized,andthatwaswonderful.Yay.Unfortunatelythough,
thefightforequalityisfarfromover.LGBTrightsarestillbeingfoughttobelimited.Forexample
writtenreligiousfreedombillsthatwouldmakeitlegalforindividualsandprivatebusinessesto
denybusiness,services,adoptionconsiderationandevenmedicalcareifdoingsowouldbe
contrarytoreligiousormoralconvictionsorpolicies.Itsworsethatpeopleinpowerusetheir
powertostandagainsttheLGBTsalreadylimitedrights.
Forexample,
RoyMoore,thecurrent
chiefoftheAlabamasupremecourt,continuestoresisttheU.S.SupremeCourtdecisionthat
legalizedsamesexmarriagelastyear.
Itsnothardto
treatpeoplewiththesamelevelrespect
weexpectforourselves,itsnotrocketsciencethatyoushouldntgetfiredbasedoffofhowyou
werebornorevictedbasedonwhoyoulove.
