Title of Lesson:
Urban Mouse and Rural Mouse
Grade Level/Subject
3rd grade Economics
Overview/Purpose
The students will read urban mouse and rural mouse. The first page is the
story, and the next two pages are the story continued but in email form of
the two mice emailing back and fourth. In this story they should be able to
grasp the simple concepts of economics, like goods, services, starting a
business when the community needs those items.
Essential Questions
How does Jackies fruit and vegetable stand influence Martin?
Is Martin making a smart business decision by starting his own fruit and
vegetable stand in the city?

Urban Mouse and Rural Mouse reading packet


Get Goods and Services in Carter City packet
o Started or completed during language arts stations (not done
during lesson but might refer to it depending on how well
students are achieving)

Content Objectives
1. SWBAT read the story and answer the essential questions.
2. SWBAT define the vocabulary words from the story.

1. SWBAT listen to the story read out loud.
2. SWBAT read the story on their own and use context clues to figure out
what words mean.

Lesson Sequence/Procedures
1. I will hand out the story and ask the students if they have any
predictions about the story.
2. If they know what urban and rural mean we will discuss this here, and
if not we will discuss it later in the story.
3. I will begin by reading the first paragraph out loud.
4. We will then talk about urban and rural and their meanings (again if we
already did)
5. I will call on students to read the next two paragraphs aloud.
6. I will then read the 4th paragraph aloud.
7. We will talk about the meaning of goods and services.
8. We will talk about how Jackie knows how much money she made that
month, but will not bring up the term profit yet.
9. I will then call on a student to read paragraph 5 aloud.

We will then read the first page of emails (emails 1-4) out loud

We will discuss the meaning of entrepreneur

We will read email 5 and talk about entrepreneur some more in
depth

We will read emails 6 and 7 and talk about the meaning of profit
14.
We will discuss the essential questions and if the class thinks
that Martian is making a good business decision by opening his own
fruit and vegetable stand in the city.
Review/Assessment
I will assess the students formatively by asking questions throughout the
lesson to make sure that they understand what they are reading and
understand what the vocabulary words mean.
Accommodations
Some students are not as high-level readers as others, yet they are all able
to read on their own. I will give adequate amount of time for students to read
so they are all able to finish.
