Green Hand Gang & Eco Schools


Prepared for: Stratford St. Mary Primary School, Suffolk, UK.

Objective
To make best use of the fantastic grounds at Stratford St. Mary Primary School and enhance pupils school
experience. Dan Wheals, currently employed as a teaching assistant will work one day a week with the school
community to start the eco schools process and rejuvenate the school grounds. The Green Hand Gang,
names by pupils was the after school gardening club started in March 2015 with Mr Wheals.

Start Whelly Wednesdays

Link the garden to the curriculum and have ideas/ projects/ a plan for each year group.
Reception Forest Schools - enjoy the space.
YEARS 1 & 2: seed sowers / plant pot sales
YEARS 3 & 4: documenters / flowers. sweet peas/ cornflower
YEARS 5 Green Hand Gang - all tasks especially general maintenance & shop selling
YEAR 6 Yoga - Fruit harvesting
STAFF - To try and link to what they were planning to do anyway and to ensure it is documented properly.
3) Measure and map out the school grounds

Get Family Dig Day for Easter to rejuvenate the wildlife area, pond fencing, willow dome and planting
areas.

School gate sales of flowers, plants and produce.

Win confidence of the school community to go bigger in 2016/17

9 sand benches (with sander maybe- need extension?) , oil them if dry. rake moss and make path. make
measurements of the area. build seed sowing areas.
16 seed sowing, labelling and research. measuring up areas and drawing plans.
23 seed sowing. make plant care info. garden beds.
30 Easter Wildlife area, chipper, pond fencing). Mistletoe spreading. Digging raspberry patch. compost
area. bird nesting areas. fire pit area. storage box for first aid etc.

6 Easter Willow Dome and mulch area. Need hose pipe. Rotivator? black currant bushes.
13 Mr Wheals has am meeting with AONB Funding panel. Back for 1pm. (Tues or Thurs am
possible) Rocket seeds experiment.

Risk Assessments:
Numbers - sensible planing
Tasks - Identifying hazzards and putting measures in place
Rain, Sun, Cold, heat, Water, gloves etc
Tidy up Time / Tool Stops.
Eating things and touching things. - Allergies known, asthma inhalers with. Sensible attitudes. e.g. One cherry
has gorgeous fruit. Its fine to eat off tree, or if must to gathering and rinse but eat fresh!
EVENTS. one offs and regular things. Adults to help and volunteers. Always more dangerous than kids.
Fire pit with precautions. Especially timings so easy to leave
Novel activity check.
Positive risk assessment, you will get messy so wear old clothes on Wednesdays.
