STANDARDS:
MAFS.5.G.1.1: Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the
intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane
located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicated
how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicated how far to travel
in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates
correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and axis and y-axis and y-coordinate).
MAFS.5.OA.2.3: Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships
between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns,
and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule Add 3 and the starting
number 0, and given the rule Add 6and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences,
and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the co
THEME:
Ordered Pairs on a Coordinate Grid
LESSON TOPIC:
Ordered Pairs on a Coordinate Grid

OBJECTIVES:
Content:
Our students are able to
Identify the location of a point on a grid when
given the coordinates. (SMP 4, 6)
Identify the coordinates when given a point on
the coordinate grid. (SMP 4, 6)
Discover the relative relationships between the
x-coordinate (horizontal location of the point)
and y-coordinate (vertical location of the
point) with respect to the origin. (SMP 7)
Engage in conversations to justify their
thinking and evaluate others reasoning. (SMP
2 ,3)

Language:
Students will use key vocabulary like origin, x-axis,
y-axis, and coordinate plane.

LEARNING STRATEGIES:

KEY VOCABULARY: origin, x-axis, y-axis, and coordinate plane.

MATERIALS:

MOTIVATION/ANTICIPATORY SET (Building Background):

Watch Study Jams on coordinate planes. Discuss Key vocabulary mentioned in video( page 373 in book).
Lead into worksheet on coordinate planes. Do first problem together as a class, have students do next problems
on their own and check with neighbors. Go over as a class. Have students do remaining problems on their own.
Check problems and if students complete early give them extra practice with riddle grid worksheet. Assign
homework from book Page 375 or 376
PRESENTATION/INPUT/MODELING (Language & Content Objectives, comprehensible input, strategies,
interaction, feedback):
Have students circle or highlight vocab on first page of worksheet and label coordinate plane.

PRACTICE/APPLICATION (meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, feedback): Turn and Talk, riddle
grid worksheet. Pull small groups.

REVIEW/ASSESSMENT (review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning):

Homework / classwork.

EXTENSION:
Grid Riddle Worksheet
HOT Questions:
Describe how to find the distance between two points that are on the same axis.
What real world situations would call for you to use ordered pairs?
Are (4,2) and (2,4) the same point? Explain your thinking.
